Help! Rear end clunks!

I'm new to the CAC and just purchased a 79. Its is something I have wanted and saved 10 years for and I just love it. However, there is is a clunking noise that seems to be coming from the rear end when I put the car in reverse and sometimes in drive. The car does not do this all of the time. Only when the cars RPMs are high when I first start it up. After it warms up and I shift carefully it does not seem to do it. What could be the problem:confused

Snubber bushing at the front of the diff., very common problem and easy to fix.

You can in the Factory Service Manual. If you do not have one get one if you plan on doing any work. Forget Haynes Or Chilton's to generic.

Thanks, I have the original owners manual and found the what I need to fix and after getting under the car it seems to be a pretty straight forward fix. You guys have been very helpful.

Use the OEM rubber bushing kit sold by the major vendors - it has bonded washers and a bonded-in steel centering sleeve, and the cushions are the correct thickness. Don't use the "poly" kit - the cushions are too thin (which moves the U-joint too close to the top of the tunnel), and they don't have the bonded washer or the centering sleeve to avoid metal-to-metal contact between the bracket and the frame.
