My 94 has as clunk in the rear end. It sounds like it's only on the left (drivers) side. Any ideas? :confused

Check the U-Joints. Sounds like one is going out on you? Easiest way to fine the suspected one, is to look for the U-Joint that is somewhat dirty, caused by grease oozing out the caps. Another way of finding a problem U-Joint, is to take a screwdriver and place it in between the cross (X), twist and load the joint, and watch for excessive movement.

thanks, that was my guess also. It started as a squeeking noise that disappeared after you drove for a few miles and turned into a clunk this weekend.

I don't know anything about new models but my mid year had a clunk from the left side also. Turned out to be shims in the trailing arm. I don't think you have knock offs but if one gets loose they can sound like a clunk also. Good luck.

Jack the car and grab the half shaft and feel for play, it should be tight. Also check the drive shaft u joints, they also make noise when they begin to go.
I would start with the most common culprits first.

:mad I hate that squeek it is a u-joint and have fun

Hey guys i have a noise in the rear end of my 86. It started about a year ago, and happens intermittently. I replaced all u joints on the half shafts. I had the car to a tranny shop a year ago to fix a leak which i thought was the rear seal, but it turned out to be the yoke on the drive shaft. They replaced the drive shaft, and the u joints. The noise started after the leak was fixed. I was told that maybe the tranny mount is loose and when i shift from park to drive the tranny jumps and makes this clunk. I have no idea, and i hate to pay the big shop cost. If anyone knows what makes a clunk other than a u joint i would love to know.

thanks

vetteboy,

Stab the throttle hard for a split second..... to cause the whole drivetrain to load up. Do it both in drive and in reverse. If you hear that clunk noise, it could possibly be the tail cush tranny mount that is broken like the the guy told you.

my right rear noise & viberation on 2004 W/ 33000 MI. Turned out to be a belt seperation in run flat tire. Replaced noisy F1 Goodyear Eagle Tires W/ 275 Mitchlin Ps3 Pilot, much quiter tire for convertibles. 45000 MI warrenty an nondirectional $100 cheaper at SAM,S CLUB W/ $15 Mount & balance!
