Rear end work is expensive!

My rear end was making some knocking/groaning noises when I came to a stop and when I started from a stop. The noises had recently become worse. I had the u-joints checked a few months back and my mechanic replaced one, but the problem continued. I then took it to a rear end specialist. When they took apart the rear end, they discovered it wasn't bolted down tightly! They also replaced all my bearing and seals. The noise is now gone and it's driving better than ever. Unfortunalty the labor alone was $450!!!

I feel a little ripped off. I don't know how far in disassemling it he was when he found out it was loose, but he fininshed taking it apart. I guess it's better than having the rear end fall off! :eek

Expensive it is...

I have to get a seal replaced in my rearend. The seal itself probably only costs a few bucks, but the labor in having the whole rearend taken apart to get to it is horrible!!! Looking at around $400-$500 to get it fixed. Ohhhh well... The expenses in having a nice car is worth it!:cool

3rd. members are a B!t@# to work on. It looks like a lump of aluminum with 3 shafts sticking out but to get it right you need to know your stuff. $500 labor is not out of line.

I have over $3,500.00 in the IRS (diff; brakes; VB&P suspension; etc.) and I could have spent even more on heavier yokes, half-shafts, etc. :eek

My next rebuild project will be a straight axle for sure. :crazy
