As my wife backed out of the parking lot she noticed the noise of something metal falling on the ground. She looked out the window and saw a sheared off bolt laying there. I discovered it was one of the 4 bolts holding the rear spring in place, in the center. I also noticed that 2 other bolts were missing, leaving only one still attached. 3 are sheared off in the item above it. Is that the rear end cover of the differential that they are screwed into? If it is, is it easier to buy a new rear end cover than to try and remove the sheared off bolts?
thanks for your help in advance!!

Thanks Bob, didn't realize the rear end had to be dropped. I have access to a hoist so it shouldn't be to difficult.

I have recently changed my leaf spring and diff cover. You do not have to remove the differential to remove the diff cover.

remove leaf spring.

Then remove the 8 bolts from the diff cover, then loosen the 2 bolts on the crossmember until there hanging on by a few threads. Then use a large pry bar to pop the crossmember out . Comes right out just like that. But I have side pipes so dont know what it would be like with stock exhaust.

Although either way you have to remove the crossmember to get to the diff cover bolts on top anyways.

It was easy to put it back in also did it by myself. Still dont know why everybody takes out there diff to get to that cover.:confused

Let me know if you need anymore info.

Thanks "wipeout" for the information. Very helpful. I'll let you know how it goes.

FYI.. ;)

The reason these things "bust" the aluminum.... They get torq. when the tires are OFF the ground... I don't recall the Torq numbers, but it was a lot smaller than I thought it would be :eek

When you replace the Spring, or the housing ... snug up the four bolts to the differential, and do the final "Torq" with the car sitting on the ground or on a hoist on all four wheels and the rear wheels rolled out to a natural stance ;)
