Question:

I have a 64 vette which needs the back left wheel bearings changed. To do this job, do you have to take off the axle? I know on the front wheels you do not. Please feel to send messages as well.
Thanks!

You will have to remove the half shaft.
You will have to remove the axle stub from the trailing arm.

It can be very difficult to remove the axle stub if it has not been removed before. Without the right tools it can be almost impossible. If you do not have the specialized tools I suggest you have a shop do the job.

Ask for references from other Corvette owners to a local shop that has experience doing this job, not just the average mechanic.

In fact, join a local Corvette club and get involved in their activities. You will meet a lot of people and have fun.

If you have not done them before take them to somebody who knows how. If not shimmed properly it can get pretty expensive. They are not like the front wheel bearings. I have a friend who years ago replaced his and had to learn the hard way.

Remove it and send it out - this is NOT a job for the average weekend mechanic; it requires special tools and techniques, and can result in catastrophic failure if not done properly. Bair's and Van Steel do this work every day.

Rear Bearing Help???

Thanks to all who have responded. I think I will take your advise and make sure whomever checks and works on this problem, knows how to diagnose and do the job properly.

Glad to help, if you have any questions or need help let me know.
Check all the parts for wear, rot, damage.

Gary (GTR1999) has done superb work for me in the past. I suggest you send him your work.
