Does anyone know what a good rebuild kit should cost? And what all is in the kit. I want to do a rebuild on my 86 (cast iron heads) and there are a lot of kits out there and I don't want to be taken to bad. Or at least have good information on price and quaility befor hand. I can get this kit off of ebayand the price looks good but is the quailit? He says he has 2 kits. One uses Hyperutetic pistons, Double roller timing set, Hi Vol oil pump and a mild street cam and includes all other parts to rebuild my engine and is $275 The second is the same except it uses TRW forged pistons and a L-82 cam { 350-350 horsepower } and costs $435.

Anyone got an idea??

One post in the tech forum should do it for you. Give it some time and you'll get a lot of feedback. ;)

PHIL you did'nt say what kind of a rebuild you are after? if you want to rebuild it stock stay away from that stuf on Ebay as you will regret buying it. go to a good book store and get a book on rebuilding the small block chev and read it. find a good machine shop and taulk with them. for instance it wont do you any good to buy over sized pistons if your block dont need to be bored out. if you have never rebuilt a engine before i encorage you to go through it. their will be many pit falls but the rewards are worth it. if you are going to hot rod your vette then considder the crate engines that are avalibel through GM . I saye this because there are so many cam, intake and cylender head comboes for the small block ( not to mention cylender block, crank and piston/rod ) that it becomes mind bogeling. you need a dino and lots of experance to know what parts work with each other. GM has already done this for you with the ZZ4 and fast burn HP moters they sell. unless you are very experanced and can do most all the work your self you will not be abell to rebild one of the same quality for less money. hope this helped echoecho

You can get a pretty good kit from Summit Racing. http://www.summitracing.com I wouldn't touch EBay for an engine kit, you're asking for problems. Plus you wont know what size bearings/pistons you will need til it's apart. I personally would NOT run some 25 year old technology stock L-82 camshaft. I would look into a Comp Cams, Crower, or Crane stick. You will NOT get 350 HP with stock 624 casting crapy Iron heads. It's just not going to happen. You could have some major work ($$$) done to them, but I wouldn't. Grab something aftermarket (even aftermarket Irons if you are on a budget, or look for good used stuff) I would dump those heads completely, you're gonna at least need to pay a machine shop ~150 to give them a valve job. They suck. If you want, you can run a set of Vortec heads and stick the Vortec TPI lower manifold on it. You can get your numbers with those heads.

If you want stock, then by all means grab a $200 engine kit, and slap it together. Yes it will be a stock motor and have 230 hp too. You might gain a little fom the cam that comes with the kit (NOT an L-82 unit), but not a ton.

It all depends on what you want to do and how much you want to spend.

Make sure you disassemble and analyze the engine to be rebuilt BEFORE buying a kit. If you don't, it would be like buying shoes without first knowing your size, or measuring your feet.

You absolutely NEVER know what will need to be done to an engine before tearing it apart. It could very well be that it needs no rebore or crankshaft grinding. Because of this, you have no idea what size bearings or rings you will need, and whether or not you will need to replace the pistons and rebore.

One more very important thing. You really need to be very careful when selecting a cam for a TPI engine. The cams that come in almost all of these kits are intended for carbureted engines. Using the wrong one on a TPI engine could make it into a dog.

I suggest you buy a cam from Lingenfelter or one of the SLP or TPI cams that are intended for use in a TPI engine.

Have fun with the project,
