I don't really know how to describe it but the dark tinted glass roof has a layer that is flaking off. Its not the tint but a thin top layer that seams to get worse after I wash the car. It appears to be a clear coat that is only noticeable up close. Is there any way to fix this, or am I stuck with either letting it all flake off in time or buying a new glass top?

Not an uncommon problem. Some owners use sandpaper to remove & then begin an ardous polishing campaign to restore the surface. Lots of work, but beats buying a new top.
It would be nice if someone who had done it responds.

Flaking Top
Hi, I have repaired my flaking top. It was fairly easy, but I did have the help from a friend at body shop, I took it in after hours, and he helped me. The proccess was quite simple, just use some wet sandpaper, about 1200 grit, to start with, sanding off all of the flaky stuff, once it seems to be removed, go over it again with 2000 grit. Then you will need to buff it out with a high speed buffer. It took several attempts to complete (all in the same evening) as spots around the edges kept showing up where the clear coat did not come off completely. It is also important to mask off the entire frame, as you can easily buff/sand the paint off the frame. Once the clear coat was off, and the top polished, it looks like brand new. I just wax it whenever I do my car, and it looks great. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the response. This info. is exactly what I needed to know. It's somewhat comforting to know this is happening to others too. It so happens my neighbor accross the streat owns his own body shop. What luck!!!!

I have a glass top and have never heard of this problem.....is your top made of plastic????? Mine is solid glass...

They are all made of plastic,if it was glass it would be alot heavier.

If it isn't terribly bad, you can use a furniture polish such as pledge and it really makes the top look much better and does a good job at hiding things.........that is until you spend the time or money to do it right or buy a new top.
