Removeable top sealant?

I just bought an '87 hatchback with a removeable glass roof. I noticed that there is a residual substance that looks like vaseline around the edge of the roof. Is it a common practice to put some type of sealant between the roof and the gasket? If so, what is the purpose and what is recommended? Thanks!

Prrobably some silicone that's left over. Itt's a common practice to use it to keep the weather stripping from deteriorating. Too much is not better tho!

chances are, it was put there to eliminate the sqeeks, I need to replace all the weather stripping on my 84, not all of it squeeks but some do leak. The Hatch back window, does alot of moving around when i'm driving, and the noise drives me insane! being old it has harded a bit and now instead of flexing, it rubs. so i used a thin coat of white lithium grease around the seal to eleminate the noise for now, but new weather stripping is in order.
