Does anyone have experience removing the gastank sticker from a 1967 Vette? I removed the gastank (took pictures) and was wondering what is the best method to remove and preserve the sticker without damaging it. The sticker is in good condition, but is very fragile, and I was concerned about tearing it. I was considering spraying it with multiple coats of clear plastic spray to strengthen it before I carefully scrape it off?? Any helpful suggestions will be appreciated.
Thanks

I suggest you leave it alone and on the tank. I can promise you that you will do more harm trying to "remove and protect" it than if you just let it sit on the tank in your car (in your garage) for the next 100 years.

If you feel you absolutely must do something, store the whole tank in your attic and install a new tank in the car.

DON'T TOUCH THE TANK STICKER, LEAVE IT ALONE.

I would not remove the tank sticker and it is very hard to damage it other than time dependent deterioration (it lasted this long without you) and look how hard it is to even see it when the tank is in the car. However, I understand the need to preserve the identity of the car. If you must, drop the tank and take pictures of the tank sticker in place, if you remove it (the sticker) you probably will damage it and also it is no longer in place on the tank. An extreme case would be to remove the tank and replace with aftermarket but I see this as almost absurd. These cars were meant to be driven and enjoyed, the verification of the true identity of all components has undeniable value but I feel that part of the allure is these little in place time capsule artifacts.
If its falling off then you probably could remove it safely but otherwise I would leave well enough alone and if necessary place some type of protective covering over it on the tank and then reinstall the tank. This is probably not what you wanted to hear but its only my opinion and you know what they say about opinions. All the best.

Dear C5D,

You have too many vettes, I am jealous as you probably need a book for your tank stickers. BTW how do you like your 97 as I am looking to possibly get a C5.

Best regards,
Gerry

Thanks all for your response. I removed the tank because it had a hole rusted in it (in addition to getting a peek at the sticker). I am replacing it with a repro with the correct 'Anderson' logo. I took pictures of the sticker (which is only loosely attached), but haven't spent much time trying to remove it. I may just store the old tank as suggested.

Simple.....
Fill the tank with water and cut around the sticker with a peanut grinder.
Not everyone has a metal backed tank sticker! :s

I would take some high quality photos prior to doing anything.
Good luck in what ever you decide!
