if the ac compressor could be removed on my 88" is there a smaller serpitine belt on the market to replace the one on there now?

You have to remember that the water pump is reverse rotation, so you will need a replacement pulley for what you removed, or you must change the water pump. ;)

email my friend ziggy at pyza123@aol.com and tell him you are a friend of tntcorvette and you want to know how to permenately remove the a/c compressor.

He lives in the Chicago area, has a 88 vette and has removed the a/c compressor.

Are there power gains that can be had?

I am not sure about power gains. My friend does alot of auto crossing and has alot of mods' on his '88.

I would imagine some parasitic power loss would be eliminated. If the smog pump kit can add about 10 then i'de guess pulling the a/c compressor can add some power.

Im keeping mine because I like a/c in the summer!

Yeah, our summers here are so freakin' hot!!!:drink <---we gotta do plenty of that!

The A/C compressor runs when you put the A/C system into defog mode. That helps take moisture out of the car by de-humidifying. So if you get fogging on the inside of the windshield, it will take a lot longer to get the moist air out of the car.

You should not see any power loss when the A/C system is not in use as the pulley just freewheels like the belt tensioner does.

It's very easy to get rid of the a/c. Here's what I did. Just get all the junk out of there. Then, cut your serpentine belt. Now wrap the belt around everything just the way it is supposed to go, except go around the tensioner the other way. Now pull the belt tight and make a line on the one side of the belt where it overlaps. Now take this belt to the parts store and put it on their measuring device. Subtract about 1/4" and that's your belt length, roughly. Peter at Doug Rippie told me to do it this way. I have been running it for about 2 years and I beat the heck outa my car with no problems. By doing it this way you don't change the rotation of the water pump either. If it's good enough for Doug Rippie, it's good enough for me. It works very slick, trust me. I think the belt for me was a 735k6, but not for sure. This is the best picture I have of it, sorry.

Oh ya, you do need to keep that half moon bracket that the compressor used to mount to because that is what the tensioner mounts to.

My Gosh...why in god's name would you want to get rid of Air Conditioning???? Beats me....
I can't live without it......How about you??????

If you lived in MN the A/C wouldn't mean so much to you. Besides, this is primarily a toy/race car for me. The sole purpose of my car is to go fast and have fun. I had to take the a/c out so I could fit a huge radiator in. I would like to have another Vette for cruising but won't be able to for some time I'm afraid.

So if an 88 compressor

and you do remove it.. what do you want for it?

Vig!

dude buy some headers or something, leave the ac alone.powers nice, but comfort goes a long way.:)

This is alao how I removed the AC on my 85. Instead of rewrapping it wth the same belt though, I just used regular string because it was much easier to deal with than the existing belt. Very easy to do and I never had a problem.
Oh yeah, Bob86 is right about the "half-moon" bracket. That will have to stay on. If you're serious about it, you can trim off the excess aluminum on the A/C bracket so it looks nice and neat. Pretty easy project and it does look pretty clean.
