I'm thinking about getting a high performance intake for my '84 Coupe. Anyone have any experience with the Renegade?

;LOL

You gotta meet Nelson !:L

He can tell you everything that you might want to know regarding the renegade intake..:chuckle

Welcome MyFlaVette to CAC.....Yes, we have a couple of big fans of the Renegade.

Renegade

Just looking to see if anyone is running the Renegade and if they are happy with it. I've read the old threads and there seemed to be a lot of bickering back and forth, but no real information on how the product performs. My 'Vette has a lot of mileage on it and I am trying to decide whether to rebuild the stock L83 with some improvements or just buy a crate motor. I'm not looking to race, but I do want something that performs well and looks and sounds great.

Yes it will work and yes it will an improvement;
By how much?????

Exactly
The bickering was a result of two people promoting the value of it before it was even available.
Both have fitted it and are happy with it , with comments like revs much higher now.
But nobody has posted any back to back comparative data to say by how much improvement is

Welcome to CAC and the C4 section!!:w

As you have already expressed, and others have explained, the renegade has been a controversial topic. Proceed with caution, as I expect you will from what I gather from your few posts.

Sorry I can't contribute anything to the original question asked, but I can't wait to see the replies to this AGAIN!

Who hoo...

This is not a real simple decision. I 'improved' the L83 for a while, then swapped to a TPI system and a 406; NOT simple or cheap. The '84's computer is not the quickest/easiest to reprogram and is slow, while having limited tolerance to mods. I considered a dual-carb intake with the enlarged throttle bodies.

A crate under the CF will suffer the same RPM ceiling from limited airflow and I am not sure anyone has improved it much. Reprogramming the CF ECM, as above. I'd NOT recommend a hi-perf axle ratio w/o more high RPM grunt.

Also, I rebuilt the L83, making a stroker 383. It runs great under a carb and Edelbrock manifold wiht HEI; the new power for my 1955 F-100 pickup.

I have a renegade and it improved the performance of my crossfire. It is fairly easy to install, I recommend you buy a distributor wrench or similar to remove and install the distributor. You will have similar performance numbers as a TPI vette low 14's instead of the low 15's that a stock crossfire runs. It is worth it to purchase it, it is a bolt on install, I had to buy a set of TBI gaskets for mine, the renegade does not come with gaskets.

Thanks!

Thanks a million for your response. I will contact DCS on Monday to order. I understand that they are shipping backorders now. Don't know how long the delay will be but it's probably worth the wait. Also going with a restore/boring service on the TB's. Thanks for the heads up about the gaskets. Did you also replace the stock heads?

"nelson84"...can you post some engine or chassis dyno data from your comparion of the stock 82/84 intake manifold to the Renegade?

Now, now, "catbert"...I really wasn't trying to be funny. Honest, I wasn't.

I'd really like to see some objective testing of that product. There's a fair amount of interest in it so it makes sense that we need some good chassis dyno data.

As would I, having a project that I'd like to use my TBs on.

My engineering training and life experience tells me that amid the hype and lack of the objective evaluation, the intake, sadly, falls short of its promise.

I have the stock heads, when I installed the renegade it was sluggish at first, but once I corrected the timing and bumped the fuel pressure it went pretty good. From my experience timing of the engine makes a huge difference. I just slapped the intake on and bolted down the TB's and it ran like a dog until I reset the timing, the timing was way off. The renegade is a good little piece. The stock crossfire has the swirl deals below the TB's and the renegade does not use them. I am not sure why GM put them on they don't do anything, they are supposedly meant to disperse the fuel arand the inside of the intake but I think it is BS. I would like to put lower gears in the crossfire but I am spending my money on another project.

Did you find some data on the renegade? Please share your findings.:thumb

I might have missed it, but I've seen nothing but anecdotal "evidence." on any board or forum. I'm almost certain that of the Renegades sold, one must have seen a dyno - even by accident. How do people that do major work like intake replacement fail to due their homework on a dyno? I know that driveability is the most important thing to some, but c'mon. If anyone has seen hard data, I'd like to know. Failing that, it's all a fairytale - to me.
