Question: Replace power steering fluid

How do I drain the existing fluid?

Then where do I fill the new fluid?

Then how do I prime the Power Steering?

Suck out all the old fluid from the reservoir

Fill with fresh fluid

Take return line to the reservoir off and channel it to a drain pan in a CLEAR tube

Jack the front end up

Have assistant fire up the car, turn the wheel from side to side while you pour fresh fluid in

When the fluid changes color, stop and top off.

Be prepared....it moves fluid pretty quick ! Try not to let the pump cavitate.

Ok, the reason I was considering replaning the fluid is because we are going to be autocrossing an old 1989 vette. I've read in several mag's that racing / autocrossing has a tendency to over heat the fluid and therefore cauing the steering system to go bad. I figured that moving to a good synthetic fluid (like Royal Purple) would help keep the temps down and prolong the life of the steering system.

One of my best/cheapest most labor saving tools that I found is a drill-pump.
Attach this $12 pump to your cordless drill and suck the fluid out of the PS, trans pan, even the engine thru the dipstick! I've used this to capture coolant and SAVE it all and use it again when replacing a hose and did'nt want to let it hit the ground and waste it...
( keep the pump clean so oil & anti-freeze don;t mix) easy to wash...circulate into a container of soapy water then rinse.

I got fittings to go down to 1/4 suction line for filler tubes and dip sticks, and then used a 1/2" discharge hose and now use this to change fluids most of the time, no mess, no hassles. Stand there and hold the drill....

it don't get much easier.

GM put PS coolers on ZR1s and that is easy enough to do on any vette. get a small cooler, mount up front and tap into the return line to the resevoir. Instant PS cooler.
