The console plate and ash tray door on my 93 has some peeling in a few places. Did a previous owner coat the plate with something or is this a factory phenomenon? Should I strip off the present coating?
Also, has anyone used a console paint to upgrade the look of a peeling plate/ashtray door and which paint would be recommended?
Thanks for the help.

SAME THING

I have a 93 Ruby with 11k and the paint has started to peel near the console release button as well.
I would suggest remove the console /ashtray plate completely.
Strip it and rough it up with 4x0 steel wool.
1 good coat of primer.
2 or 3 coats of satin or semi-gloss black.:upthumbs
I would suggest a clear coat on top but this would produce a glossy finish.
Good Luck
P.S. The warmer your console and paint(hot tap water) are the better adhesion and finish you'll get.

Does the 93 have that rubberized finish like the 94s? If so there have been several guys who have had success with duplicating the look/feel with "Plastidip" (I think that is the way it's spelled). I'll do some searching and see if I can find those posts.

Have you ever thought about the laminate fiber carbon or wood grain overlays? I installed the carbon fiber in 86 and it looked great. Ecklers
has them. If memory serves me right they have burl wood, rosewood and carbon fiber.
The install was easy as long as you take your time and go slow.
