Retarded Timing

While reading another thread a member was talking about his timing was retarded. Is this always nessesary? If I'm running
8 degrees BTDC what should it be? This is on a 327/300.:confused

Your car should run fine at 8* BTDC, assuming your mechanical and vacuum advance systems are operating properly; spec for the 327/300 is 6*-8*. Retarding timing from production specs is generally only necessary if detonation (pinging) is experienced.
