I don't think it's better than Mobil 1 synthetic; but that's from the readings that I have done. I think Mobil 1 and Amsoil are neck and neck.

They did a test with an LS1 Camaro and changed the oil and tranny fluid over to Royal Purple. They dynoed it before and after. After the Royal Purple change, they picked up 8rwhp. :)

They are roughly equal.

If you replaced all your common fluids with full synthetics like they did in the episode of HorsePower TV edmond is alluding to, you would probably gain HP as well. Plus you dont know how old the fluids were in that LS1 Camaro, so that affects the testing.

Like Vader said, very unscientific testing to say the least. I'm sure the temperatures of those fluids would affect the dyno results.

Royal Purple is very expensive isn't it? I have not seen Amsoil being sold at any store around here. Mobil 1 is easily available at Wal Mart in 5 quart containers for $20; that may be another reason why Mobil 1 is so popular.

Mobil 1 is high in ash and is not recomended by the best engine builders.

Royal purple if you can aford it then use it.

The 8hp picked up he was talking about was done on power block tv.

GM wants you to use Mobil-1 because they need the engine rebuild from time to time.

Mobil-1 has been the factory oil fill in Corvettes since the introduction of the LT1 motor in 1992. Even the LT5 motor got Mobil-1 in '93. Form everything I have read on different Corvette-oreinted forums, I have not heard of engine failures or problems with excessive buildups of deposits due to use of Mobil-1 when changed at the factory recommended intervals.

Can you name any of these "best engine builders" that specifically state that Mobil-1 is not satisfactory or adequate for high performance motors??

No flames intended here, but I'm sort of curious. I would thinkg that Reeves Callaway, Doug Rippie and Lingerfelter Performance would have no problems in recommending Mobil-1 in any of their engine packages.

Isn't Mobil 1 also recommended by Porsche and Viper?

If you knew about mobil-1 and the first time they put distilledwater in it to make the oil !The reason the USA does not use our own oil ,it's high in ash .
Mobil-1 is high in ash and check with Chris at AP engineering in detroit Mich.
I worked for Wynn's oil company for over 5 years,8 years with other oil company's.Answer this question why ship US oil over seas?
1.Its high in ash and harder to pass emissions.
2.Win fall profit tax.
3.Who ownes 3/4 of the US oil reserves?
Great Britain.
I always do my own tests to make sure it works.
I never go with the crowd.
Justice Brothers Engine Tune Up is better for your car engine then Wynn's
But your not to know that.

Hmmmmm..............Is that why Reeves Callaway only uses Mobil 1 and gives you a letter stating to only use that in his cars? (By the way, the head of engine development for Callaway is Jim Jones, former owner of Traco Engineering and was the builder of Dale Earnhart Sr. engines.)

As I recall reading, less than 30% of the crude oil refined in this country comes from the Middle East. Alaska provides a big chunk as does Texas, Oklahoma, off shore from Louisiana and Florida, England and South America.

A lot of American crude oil goes to Asia and for the most part, they do not have the stringent emissions testing as we have in most of the US. So they buy it and probably don't worry about the ash content.

Great Britian may own some of the large oil companies in the US like BP, Tesoro, Shell (partially) and others, but I bet they don't own much of the oil reserves. That would be under the careful control of the US government.

As far as additives to my engines, not one drop of that stuff, be it Justice Bros, Wynns, STP or such. It may work in old high-mile motors that are about dead or sound like the pistons are ready to swap holes. but there is no reason to add oil additives to any engine built in the last 10-15 years. The engine technology and even oil lubrication technology is far better than the 50's and 60's where I remember seeing lots of advertisements for additives of this type. Most dealerships and independent repair facilities tell their customers that oil additives are not necessary in today's engines.

this oil thing has always got me freaked out as well....i have 2 sbc race engines.the first engine is a 406 and sees about 7200 rpm. i used the valvoline racing 20w50 crude oil and i changed it every weekend [averaged aprox 25 ,1/4 mile passes per weekend] with a fram hp4 filter. from april through july i put 320 passes on it so i pulled it out and put my spare in.the engine builder called me last week and told me the bearings in the 406 were like brand new. i was kinda shocked!!.......my spare is a different animal...its a 342 sbc that sees 8800 rpm. i decided to put alot of money into the oiling system.i also called red line oil company and they recommended i use their straight 30 weight synthetic oil.but they stated the engine must be broken in and rings seated using a crude oil [non synthetic] it cost me about 80-90.00 to fill this oil pan with the redline synthetic oil......but after hearing how good my 406 looked running just 20/50 crude,i think i would have just stayed with that.........i also have heard nothing but good things about mobil one, besides, how many people actually would have the dealer rebuild their engine?? if its warranty, dosent the dealer usually just install a short or long block? what is ash anyways?

Mobil 1 went over 215k miles in my 77 impala without ANY lifter or valve train noise. It had it in it when it first came out and the car had Havoline for the first 50K. Since at the time I was and Airman and needed to know how little money I had to put in it's tank I kept a record of every drop of gas that went in it. Well, I avg. a 10k segment before and after the change and found it made .8mpg increase in milage. We changed the oil once a year. a few years we put nearly 20k on it.
My vette has over 200k and it doesn't use a qt of oil in over 4k miles I change it every 10k miles.
Maybe there is better oil. Mobil 1 will get by! If you need your engine rebuilt its not because of the oil.

I am a little confused here. :confused Crude based oils can have ash in them. I understand that. But synthetic oil has ash in it ??? How does ash get into synthetic oil ? ;shrug BTW I am at 207000 miles on Mobil 1 in an 89 Riviera .
