quick question. Do I need to take off the valve covers to remove the intake runners? (L98)

I am not sure, I don't think so because when I picked up my motor from the rebuild the guy had the valve covers on it before the runners, plenum, and what not. So I will say no, but it might be wrong...

From the looks of it, you have to. I just can't see how you can get to the lower bolts on the runners with the valve covers in the way.

I was afraid of that. I was hoping to do the intake swap in pieces but I don't want to create extra work for myself either

do you think a swivel ratchet will do the trick?

I don't know, there just isn't much access space for the lower bolts. I guess if you had a really long bit, that would work.

thanks Edmond. I'll play around this weekend. If I can get the bolts out I'll slap on the siamesed runners and see how much I gain or loose (I'm betting that I won't notice)

I was hoping to throw the stock plenum and runners on the bigmouth manifold. If it's extra work I'll just put the whole intake together at once

you can pull the intake with out pulling the valve covers but putting it back on might be a problem. wouldn't hurt to pull them anyway and put new gaskets on them also.

That's a good idea. Valve cover gasket leaks are pretty common in all the vehicles I've worked on.

And while Will is at it, he may as well throw some 1.6 roller rockers in there.:D

exactly :upthumbs

I'll give it some thought (all weekend I'm sure ;)) but I doubt I can afford it right now.

Are rockers something to buy new or are used ones acceptable?

thanks guys

I would buy new ones. I just bought a set of Harlan Sharps from jegs for 198, they were recommended by Mad-Mic and others. They are not something I would spend a lot of money on. And definetly get 1.6's not 1.5's.

That's what I was just about to say. I remember your post about that a few weeks ago. I don't see a point in getting 1.5's:L When are you putting your 1.6's in?

I think they can give you a solid 10hp and some lower operating temperatures.
