running problem on startup

Maybe someone has some ideas about this problem. On a 1982 xfire I am having problems with it not wanting to run when you first start it, it spits and sputters and you have to keep pumping and feathering the gas to keep it running. It does this for a short period of time, (minute or two) and then clears up and runs great for as long as you want to drive it. But when you shut it off, (and it doesnt matter how long it is shut off 30 seconds or two weeks) it does the same thing again on startup. I am just now getting ready to work on this problem so the only thing i know at this point is there is no check engine light or any stored codes. Does anyone have any experience with this type of problem and an idea where to start.

i would look at my plugs .see if they are burning rich.before you start it up .take the air cleaner off .turn the key on and see if you have dripping from the injectors.

Unhook the vacuum hose to the egr valve, might be receiving vacuum at idle.
Check the fuel pressure, might be low or slow to get up to proper pressure. It should be around 9-13 psi.
Check for vacuum leaks, its common to leak around the throttle shafts.

Thanks for the tips, I will look in to it the first of the week. Got a busy weekend doing other stuff uuck, would rather be in the garage.
