Long story short I put a new Opti in Jan. I had to replace it because it had water in it. The new opti has a fitting that looks like a hose should go from the opti to something. since my car is a 93 it did not come with a vented Opti from GM. My question is how do I retro fit my 93 to get the benefits of this design change?;help. And I was not at the mechanics when he installed the new opti so I do not have any idea were to look for this fitting now that it is on the car behind the water pump:boogie

I worked on a firebird recently with a fitting for a vacuum line on the opti. Is that what you are referring to? It is on the drivers side and you should be able to see it from the top. Use a flashlight and you might have to remove the serpentine belt to see it. If I remember correctly it connected to the air intake before the throttle body. Probably put there to reduce moisture buildup.

I don't get it... the LSx series of engines are the best (V8) engines GM has designed, of course, that is my opinion. The LSx engines respond extremely well to standard mods and make stupid power. I have an LT1 in my '92 and I like it, but it is no match for the LS1 in my '99. But it is not only the engine, the LS1 runs so much smoother due do the better software and late model PCM.

I have a 1992 Corvette w/ 151,000 miles. It is the 100% original Opti-spark, including cap and rotor. I have 0 plans to ever change it or retro fit the device to be vented.

F.Y.I. I also had to replace the water pump because it was leaking all over the place, including the Opti, distilled water baby.:thumb

My 1st Vette had an LT4, one sure looks great stuffed under the hood of this beast!

Here is what you have to do, you can run a hose from the opti to one of the 2 ports on the passenger side of the intake.
Next you will need a T connector and another short piece of hose, I think it is a 1/8".
Put the short piece on the intake, connect your T connector to it and then put your vacuum hose from the opti on one connector and the hose you took off on the other.

PS: Suggest you don't use the Fuel pressure regulator vacuum hose to this but one next to it.
Good Luck.

Not trying to flame or anything but did you not notice the J/K at the end of my post?

People dont give the LT1 and LT4 enough credit they are great engines in their own right and VERY capable of putting out HIGH HORSEPOWER when built right. Are they as good as the LSX? NO, the LS Series is better in just about every respect, and I agree it IS the best V8 GM has ever made. The Opti-Spark gets a bad rap but if you can find a more accurate way to time an engine with a distrubutor I would like to hear it. Very accurate and if taken care of will last a VERY LONG time.

By the way, your LS idles smoother because it DOESNT have the tradtional SB Chevy firing order. The software, and PCM have some to do with it but it is mostly the firing order. Ever notice how LSX engines sound different than Gen 1 SB's and LTX engines???

AGAIN I am NOT trying to FLAME anyone, I get a little upset when people degrade the LT like it is a piece of crap or something.
BESIDES its not WHAT engine you have its about how much MONEY you got. There are Gen 1 Chevy small blocks out there that would walk all over ANY LS in a stock application.

Some parts companies sell a harness for the o/spark.

Agreed... I did not see the j/k after your post. Sorry.

Yes, I'm aware of the firing order too. Most people don't realize that the LTx motors were a transition to the LSx engine, hence its short life span. The Opti-Spark was also the transition to distributorless ignition for GM. When it worked, the Opti worked great and did its job, much better than a traditional distributor. I changed mine, it is not that bad, but I am also very mechanically inclined. Also, most people do not understand production and what goes into developing / making / marketing a vehicle. There are so many things that go on behind the scenes that effect the total outcome of a project... it is mind boggling.

No doubt there are SB's out there that produce more power than an LSx, but they do not have the drivibility of an electronic fuel injected motor.

Fair enough

GM had distributorless ignition earlier than the intro for the 92 LT1, the older Buick Grand Nationals as I recall had a 1 Gen waste spark setup, the LT5 had coil packs introduced in 90.

To be fair, as you said in your post other factors of production may have lead to using the Opti-spark versus the other available ignition systems.

So glad we are away from that stuff, Coil on Plug or Coil Near Plug is the best way to go anyway.

You are so right on the driveablity of the EFI systems. Still amazing what old school can do sometimes though.

Hello Remember me Thanks to those of you that provided some information on my problem with venting the opti and not venting my emotions.
