Service Column Lock

I just purchased the bypass kit and I'm putting it in when it shows up. I'll then say good by to this problem for ever:bang

This Is Terrible!

I was washing and waxing the car yesterday and i got in to move it out of the sun. I turned the key it fired right up and i got pull key and wait 10 seconds. So i did that and it said service column lock the wheel does not turn. I tried the tugging no luck and i tried the fuse no luck. I called the dealer and they said since it was a 97 it was not covered on the 98 to 2000 recall. What do i do i dont want to pay cash for it( seeing as im 16 and have none!)

Service Bulletin No. 01-02-35-008 covered 1997-1998, 2000 for your 1997 it covered all VIN numbers. The fix was to install P/N 88952427 Harness Kit and I believe a 26056108 nut.

I believe if you put enough "pressure" on your local GM dealer they would fix the problem based on the service bulletin at no cost.

Presently, I am having my 1999 fixed at no cost. I had to go all the way to the district manager but finally had GM fix at no cost.

Good luck.

It happened again....

My gut feeling is that it is heat related. When ever I go on a date and it's hot outside, it happens.

Maybe the problem is your dates are too Hot!!

This service lock problem happened on my 1998. Toed to the dealership and repaired under warranty.

The problem as I see it is a minor programming bug. It's too bad that we cannot reprogram that part of the car.

My 98 automatic convertible has the service column lock problem,... and I'm supposed to pick up a gf at the airport tomorrow. I tried removing the #23 fuse and also rocking the wheel while turning the key. No dice. Roadside assitance told me to call the dealer monday. I do not like this car right now. Does disconnecting the battery help?

Tried It

I tried doing the battery and the fuse and no such luck. All the battery did was mess up the clock. At least urs is on the recall.
Good Luck!

Lets see if we can work this backwards.

According to c4c5, there are 16 different things that can cause this to occur. Question for the people getting this. What were the conditions before you got the steering column message. Was the car hot, was it humid.. What was going on.

Mine was really hot after sitting in bumper to bumper. After I allowed it to cool down, I got the pull key and wait 10 seconds. I did, I heard the servo inserting the pin and I knew I was golden.

Conditions have been very humid, and problem first arose at 6:30 pm, after sitting outside and un-used for most of the day. Since then, I've tried working on it in the dead of night. No change.

I am looking into a "bypass kit" to cure this problem once and for all. Any info on such a kit would be much appreciated.

I just installed mine today, it was a piece of cake... It only took me about 30 min to install and the instruction were very clear. No more problem for me :)

Here is the place I got mine from

This is the first time I ever heard of this? There are many out there using this item and I would think there would be posts all over this and other forums if this was the case.:eyerole

Thank you Slickman... ... My father says I should stay stock on this thing. I sure would like to hear from others. Any others with long term experience with the by pass kit?

Got Her Back!

FInally got my vette back about a week and 150 dollars later. This is what they told me in EXACT words:
Performed diagnosis on column locked, found PCM capacitors loaded and would not unload, removed battery terminals and cleared PCM,
Works OK,

First of all i have no idea whaty a pcm is and what the hell is a capacitor and why is this so confusing. All this computer stuff drives me crazy. Its so easy to work on my other car all I have to do is change parts or set things it involves no computer. COMPUTER SHOULD NOT BE IN CARS ITS IMPOSSIBLE TO WORK ON ONE!!!!
Good luck to everyone else with this wicked annoying problem!

C4C5Specialist,

A quick question. Was told that the factory bypass kit is only for A4's not standards.

They redid the entire recall again including the splicing. So far so good, but it will be a while before I take a date in it until my trust returns. At least it got home with no problem. Will compare mileage tomorrow. They did use about 2 gallons of gas again.

Wouldn't it be nice just to reprogram the BCM just like we can the ECM. I know, I'm a programmer and am seriously looking into it. It has to be better than the logic they used when developing the car. Honestly, the logic would be to pull the pin when the key is turned to the on position and not reinsert the pin when the key is removed. Finally, don't limit driveability when error from pulling the pin is incurred. Warning message optional. Simple fix, no screwdrivers and/or torq screws.

Finally, since my toy is in a secured garage when I'm not driving it and I have Lojack, the locking mechanism for the steering column is really not a security issue. If I was really concerned, I'd get the Club as well. Anyway, if they really wanted it, they would get it and there is pretty much nothing I can do about it anyway.

Please let me know what you think.

Thanks

Mike

Check with c4c5specialist.

He was the one who first posted this on C5Forum about a year ago.

I have also spokenwith him several times about this. You can reach him through this forum for more information.

I am getting mine fixed at the dealer also (no cost to me) because I pressured the dealer and GM. Although I have a 98, mine was not part of the recall. I expressed to GM that it was total BS and raised such a fuss, now they have been calling ME to find out more about the problem. As soon as I get my car back, I will be sure to post the dealer's and GM's response.

Here is a current link with a response by c4c5specialist on the BCM issue referenced several posts above:

HI there,
Yes, I would only want the factory installation for the repair.
It has been proven that the bypass does NOT adequately load the BCM, and can show problems down the line.
You will always hear the lock cycle. This is part of the repair, as the actuator still provides electrical load. The other side to this is a feedback relay, and a lock plate that does NOT allow the actuator to engage.

Well...I feel for all of you! But I think that I have the worst of them all. After all (8) the tow trips my 2000 has taken to the dealership, they resently disengaged my steering column. I had the car for 3 years and I don't feel that they should of disengage the steering column. After all it is a feature that I paid for. And now the rims are peeling.
But it seems like anytime I have a problem with my car...the dealership gets mad at me???? Go figure! I may have a lemon for sure that matches its color.
