My wifes 97 has a message stating a service column lock. Is this due to some service that must be done to prevent some damage, and if so why wasn't there any message prior to this. I need to know how to unlock this if I need to get it a mechanic. Any help would be great.:confused

Dave,

There is a service bulletin regarding this situation which you can view here in our Knowledgebase:

If you take your car to your local Chevrolet Dealer, they should be able to reference this bulletin and perform the necessary repairs. Hope this helps.

steering lock

Rob,
This service bulletin is not a recall is it? I have to be honest and say that I am not impressed with this car from a manufacturing standpoint. We've only had this car for just over a year(I bought it with 17500 miles on it)and there has been numerous problems. One of the steering hubs had to be replaced, the left mirror just started spinning one day and that had to be fixed. The drivers side window rattles and the fuel pump makes a loud whinning noise which I am being told is normal. Other than the fuel pump I believe all of my problems are service bulletins, meaning that all of these costs will come out of my pocket for a car that cost over 40 grand new. Who knows if these problems would have arose during the warranty period had the previous owner drove it more. We thought that we were getting this car for a good price but at the moment half price would seem to be the only fair one. I am really disgusted with the fact that this vehicle is having this many problems with as little miles as it has.(just over 23000). Well, I think I've vented enough for now, but I need a favor. Can you please send me the 800 number and the address for contacting someone at GM about these problems. I am very interested in hearing what they have to say about it. Thanks Dave:hb

I know the feeling

My 97 had 9000 miles when my steering column locked up in july. With 10,000 miles 2 weeks ago it locked up again. It ended up costing me 650 dollars just to have the steering column completed adjusted and have the motor in the column replaced. I would recommend the after market bypass its much cheaper and it works better. I also have the fuel pump noise its not bad and it is normal. Everything else is good. Dont even try to get GM to cover it they wont i tried everything. Good Luck!

Dave,

No, to the best of my knowledge, there was not a recall on this issue. I could be wrong. Check the Knowledgebase just to be sure: http://corvetteactioncenter.com/kb/

Most of your issues are Service Bulletin related issues. Let me talk to someone tomorrow, explain the situation and see if I can find out more information for you. I will get reply back here.

Also, your whining fuel pump is also covered under a service bulletin. Again, double check in the Knowledgebase.

Actually, I stand corrected. There was a recall for the Service Column Lock issue, but it only involved 1998-2000 Corvettes. You can view the recall notice here:

I was not able to get any further information for you. Have you taken the car to a dealer and explained all of the problems to them? They will be able to see that they are service bulletin related issues, and may be willing to work with you?
