i have a 1990 with 45k miles. recently the service ride control light has illuminated. what is the possible problem(s)? is there anything simple or obvious that i can check or do to fix?

The light will come on if you move the car numerous times without achieving any miles per hour on the speedo. Like moving in and out of the garage. Once you drive it the light should go out. If not then you have a deeper problem. I can't help you diagnosis this if the light does not go out but I'm sure someone will have an answer for you. Good luck!!

no dice! i have driven the car before and since light illuminated. also, no fault codes are being displayed...? thanks anyway

It sounds like you have the FX3 option. It is a set of shocks that are controlled by a motor located on top of each of them. It could be the motor or the shock. Mine did the same thing and it was a defective shock. Bilstein will rebuild them for $100 each. I chose to just replace the shocks and save the old ones until I decide to sell the car.

Before you go spending money, try this...

Remove the actuator from the top of your shocks (only held on by wire spring clips) and check that the nut on top of the shock hasn't come loose. If it has all you need do is tighten the nut to the specified torque. Cost = $nothing.

This happened twice on the front right shock on my old '93 though it hasn't happened on my '90.

I did actually get a fault code though (right front out of position) but the problem was fixed in seconds. Obviously this is a breeze to do on the fronts but a ~!'?/<~~!! to check the back shocks.

If you're not getting a code are you sure you're checking for faults correctly and watching for the "service ride control" light to flash?
