Anyone know how I can reset the fan temp on my 96. :confused I was driving today and the temp shot up to 224... I would like to get the fans to kick in a little earlier around 210 or so if I can. Will a chevy dealer do this for me?

Thanks

I had the same issue when I got my 96 a few weeks ago. I used a Hypertech programer to reset the fans to come on at about 212. It worked great and allowed me to keep the original equipment thermostat.

The fans are controlled through the ECM. The ECM "sees" a value from the cooling temp sensor and energizes the fan relay when the temp is high enough. On OBDII system, a HyperTech Power Programmer can change the value the ECM looks for in order to energize the fan relay.

A Chevy dealer can do that but you will have to buy the Power Programmer which runs around $350 at Summit Racing. A dealer would sell them for much more. The system is designed to allow you to change some parameters (besides the fan power on temp) in the ECM but the Power Programmer will first upload the factory ECM settings to its memory before it downloads the changes. Once you use it on your car, it cannot be used on another car unless you return the factory settings to the ECM.

BTW, 224 is not necessairly that high in hot weather. The primary fan should come on around that temp and will remain on until the coolant temp drops. You can also force the secondary fan on by simply turning on the A/C.

chip replacement or tweeking

I recently purchased an aftermarket chip for my 90 vette. The company is called Howell Performance in Michigan. Troy from Howell programs new chips which replace the stock chips for about $200. I never could pass emissions due to my cam. Now I do pass.
Well the same time I had the fans changed to come on for a hypertech chip and 160 deg thermostat. Fans come on at my choosing of 165 and 195. Saved me during the 102 degree day in Seattle traffic yesterday. The engine gage used to get close to the bottom 250 deg. with the stock fan settings (220 - 239) deg during outdoor temp. variances of 80-85 deg. Now, all is running about 210 or thereabouts in 100 deg. with both fans running. I was really impressed after years of high engine temps with 80-90 degree outdoor air temps.
Hopes this clip helps
