shake, shake, shake

I have an 87 corvette coupe. It has 204k miles on it, I just learned I need to rebuild the suspension in front and rear. My question is while I am doing this what should I look for as the reason the car "shakes" between 60 and 70 mph with the wheels balanced. They were balanced and the car still shook. Thanks in advance for your help.

You might want to check for a loose U-joint somewhere in the drivetrain.....

good luck

Jay

thanks for the information. This place is a plethera of information.

Shimmy

Mine used to shimmy over 75mph. I bought 2 new tires for the front AND had a good 4 wheel alignment. Now she purrs through 115. Maybe faster, I just ran outta road. The point is that you can be in perfect balance, but if you are out of alignment you have problems. The alignment solved mine.

OH---Welcome, you and your vette will love it here!:J

Doc,

Bad wheel bearings will shake you up as well.

With that number of miles you should just plan on replacing everything from tie rods, ball joints, a-arm/trailing arm bushings, Ujoints, and wheel bearings.

My buddy is replacing the rear wheel bearings on his 89 as I write this.

It is expensive, but just one of these items out of tolerence will cause a shake, shimmy, and rattle.

My 94 wheels MUST be "on the car speed balanced" otherwise it shakes. I have tried numerous "vibration specialist" that just had computerized speed balancing. After I had the computerized speed balancing, I noticed that there was still a very noticable vibration. I then took it to a place that does On The Car speed balancing. He put my front wheels on a machine that made them spin at about 80mph and you could see the car bouncing up and down, it was completely obvious.

He balanced them with that machine and you can put your hand on the front end and actually FEEL the vibration go away. It was cool. Had my 94 to 125mph with no vibration at all.
