shift knob removel

I have a 89 coupe how to i remove the shift knob. I have an idea but i dont want to break it.

Take a screwdriver, pry up shift pattern
Get a pair of vice grips, pull up on metal T
Unscrew knob

I have an automatic, carefully pry up the black plastic button on the top of the shift handle, it comes out pretty easy. After you remove the button you will see a snap ring inside the hole that the plastic button was in. Remove the snap ring and pull the shift knob up to remove it.
