Hey Everyone,

I just bought a 03 AE 6sp Conv, it only has 5k miles (8k km) on the car - I think that's on the "very" low side from the others I found. It was a one owner car and getting it from a GM dealer, should I look at getting the extended Warranty? I do get a 5000k / 3month free

Its something like $1200 a year.... a little cheaper for each year you buy, up to 4 max.

My Dad is a profession mechanic, so that's not a problem - I guess you never know what might happen in the futurt to the car but I figure in the next 4 years if I have to put $4000 into it... oh well, if nothing goes wrong I'm $4000 ahead.

I think I'm not going to do it - unless someone can convince me to do so.

That's a tricky question. Are we talking $1200 CAD or US?

I don't think the question is about your dad being a professional mechanic. I think it's about the price of the parts!:ugh If a couple of electrical things go wrong, your warranty could very well pay for itself for a year.

You know if a part has "Corvette" on it, it's bound to have a generous markup in price!:L

so in the past I only bought parts for my 1981 and everything seem to be priced the same as if it was for a Caprice Classic... but then again that was a 1981....

does anyone have a story where the bill was going to be big, but it was nice that warranty covered it?

:wWelcome to CAC.

5th. gear syncros, 5K to rebuild-covered. CD unit in stereo 1K to replace unit-covered. $700 oil pressure sending unit-covered. Upper belt tensioner $400-covered. Common problems with C-5 include column lock, wiper motor and PC board, BCM $$$, oil pressure sending unit, belt tensioner, electrical ground faults, dual zone AC control just to name few. The parts are very expensive, you will learn the meaning of the word Corvette tax. When was the last time you spend $500 for a single rear tire for the Caprice?. It's a great car especially if you consider the cost of an alternative vehicle in the same performance class. With 5K the car has not had a chance to show any problems, it might never do. With 5K on the meter the car must have been sitting idle for long periods. Depending on how it was stored it might develop issues with dried seals or other components later down the road. I would recommend getting an extended warranty. $1200 a year seams little high. You should shop around and see if it's the best deal you can get. All cars have issues, Vets just cost little more to rectify. When comparing warranties read the fine print. Coverages are very different and there absolutely is no such thing as bumper to bumper warranty. Congratulations and don't let me scare you, it's a great car and you will enjoy it allot. Regards, Zig.

I thought to get the GMPP extended warranty you had to buy it while the car was still under the factory warranty. For an '03, that has expired.

tom...

There are lots of second party companies offering extended warranties. I think that is what he was talking about.

Not sure the rules in the US, but here cause its been inspeceted at the GM dealer to be OK now (it did have the column lock issue - which they fixed) they alow you to buy the same GM warranty.

I'm going today at noon to pick up the car, thanks for all your input - going to talk to the dealer more about it - maybe I can get the price down a bit.

I bought an extended warranty for my 02. It saved me twice the price that I paid for it (about $1300 it seems for an extra 5 years and 40k miles) in one trip to the dealer to fix a few things (one of which was the electronic braking & traction control computer).

Yes- I would do it again- but $1400 a year... that's getting a bit steep. No, I probably would not do that.

I also say do it. There's something like 8 computers in that car. If 1 or 2 of those should go, that warranty just paid for itself.

Buy a GMPP only

I picked up an extended warranty from Fichtner or something like that in Montana for approx $1600 and it was for 3 yrs and a lot of miles.

The problem is the electronics that scared me. I wouldn't touch any other warranty co.

That's my 2 cents

Ticking time bombs???????????

The problem today is not the car but the people who drive them! A car has to be driven properly and maintained, if not it's going to brake down.

All of my vettes were problem free except for the normal things wen they were first del.

Electronic's is the biggest problem for the ome mechanic.

There is so much that can happen in the electronics area that can cost thousands that have absolutely nothing to do with maintainace.

I totally agree!

I had an '01 Vert before and I had to trade it for my current Vette due to multiple computer issues. The EBCM alone would have cost me $2500 (not including labor) if the dealer I bought the car from (used) didn't take mercy on me and fixed it for free.

I had an aftermarket warranty (Contenental Warranty) and the didn't cover all 10 main computer sensors that come in the Vette. I paid out of pocket for some other issues that came up later in addition to the $2800 I paid them!

As luck would have it, I wound up in a better Vette with GMPP, which I extended recently while on leave from Iraq. GMPP is the best warranty in the business and I think you can still get one even on a later model Vette. Just check with a GM dealer.

I just put a GMPP on my 02 for another 4 years for $2000 with a $50 deductable. That comes to $500 a year and I though THAT was high. If it is not a GMPP I would not even bother with it. If you have a GMPP already you can extend it as long as you do it 3 months before the existing policy expires. I figured even if I sell the car it is a selling feature and if the buyer does not want it and is not willing to pay the extra money for it I will just cancel it and the remainder will be prorated and refunded. :upthumbs

I'm also going to get the GM warranty from Fichtner. I don't have the figures here, but it was very reasonable and would be equivalent to a new car warranty if I enroll before the '05 has 12k miles and before the original warranty expires.

I bought the extended warranty and it paid for itself 2x over in the first 2 months. I think the previous owner probably got rid of the car because the original warranty had expired and the 2 things wrong with it would've been exhorbitant to fix without a warranty.

Buy it.:upthumbs

I bought mine with 16K miles, driven it daily for the past 5 years and now have 92.5K and have spent $200 on parts. Did the work myself. I say why waste the money.
