side exhaust on a '92

I have been thinking about putting a side exhaust system on my recently purchased 92. It comes off the catalytic converter and comes back and around to exit like a normal side exhaust system. I don't know anyone who has done this and would like some feedback on problems you have had or heard about.

mclemore.........nice ride you got there buddy.I remember a few years back there was some company who made "sidepipes".They looked awesome(fiberglass covered to match the car color).I'll see if I can dig up that magazine.

Thanks...you have good taste yourself. I have found a website that sells some sidepipes but am hesitant on anything that is untried and unproven that might steal some horses from under my hood or worse yet, spend the money on something that just doesn't work. All thoughts and opinions always welcome.

I ran 'em for years; loved 'em!

Only reason I ditched them was due to the fact that I could not quiet my new engine (it was way too loud).

I almost purchased a '92 coupe with them. it sounds cool, nice and deep... it is also nice because the sounds comes from the side of the car instead of the rear. One last note, the kit makes the car look lower.

Sidepipes on a corvette? Who ever heard of such a thing? :L

First of all, welcome to the forum. Great place.

I've seen and heard a couple of C4's with sidepipes and I like 'em!
They do make the car look lower and they sounded really nice.
Both of the C4s I've seen were red coupes.
I think they look great. Of course, I'm kind of partial to sidepipes and vettes!

What do ya do about the rear valence exhaust cut out, kinda looks out of place with cutouts and no tips hanging out of them,just an observation, Im sure someone makes a smooth rear valence, but then ya have to figure that into the price of the exhaust Mod.

Lawrence Keech, Inc., manufacturer of the "Side Effects" side exhaust system for the C4s, has some things that you can stick in there to somewhat cover the openings. My '87 openings were not as large as the later model years, so I did not concern myself with trying to cover the cut out area.

congrats KEN.You got the sidepipes distributor.I saw a 91 back then and it looked awesome.Power effects was advertising in magazines(R&T,C&D) but I thought I saw it in mid americe or something.

mclemore...........If you don't mind me asking ,how much did you pay for your vette.The reason I ask is because I am thinking about getting a more recent one(hopefully a newc6),and a couple of buddies asked me what I want for my vette.To me the car is still worth what I paid if not more..lol.....man I remember when I drove it off the lot.....I was scared to press on the gas pedal,cars ahead of me would pull to the side to watch me go by.What a feeling owning a vette.

invinceablevett, to answer your question about how much I paid: $11,000 from a guy in FL. with 68,000 mi. Not much has been done for performance and I feel exhaust is the first thing to adjust. I really dig the side pipe look and think that's the way I want to go. Also related, I have found that the rear valance is actually only around $100 bucks.

I really wanted to get these for my project, as I love the look. I'll never forget the snortin', smoking L-88 equipped '69, revving up in a pre-launch stance!

Ken, I thought the lowered car and siders caused clearance problems and exhale restrictions for the new motor. That's the primary reason I stayed away from these as an exit for my 406cid.

I understand these breathe a bit better than the stock system.

The main clearance problems were associated with the lift point (jacking point) extensions, which are a requirement if you plan on using those side lift points, and when you hit those jack extensions for the first time you'll think you're going to have a heart attack, because it slams them so hard you think you smashed the rocker panels, but you never even scratch 'em.

Otherwise, clearance wasn't a problem, other than what you'd expect from the C4s. I caught a curb with my right side exit hole once though! But the, I nicked the wheel when I did that too. :duh

Yes Mike, I believe they did breath easier, especially as I had them setup in that I was running the basic straight-thru system with no resonators or extra baffling in the sound capsules (chambers?). Then, when I built the 417, I had to add the entire arsenal to the system.

This included the resonator normally used in convertible installations, consisting of extra packing, along with three motorcycle-type baffles arranged in a pyramid shape, and extra packing in the sound capsules along with ten or twelve (I forget) of the same style baffles inside, only smaller in diameter. This still was not enough to quell the disturbance I felt my beast was making, so I went back undercar with a 3" system and 40-series Flowmasters. Now I don't go around sounding like a racecar run amok and shooting wildly! :gap

A drawback if you are seeking lighter weight, say to go drag racing, the Side Effects sytem is very heavy! I swear some of that piping reminded me of cast iron sewer piping. Good God that stuff was heavy! :eyerole

I DID love the looks of the C4 side exhaust, and the compliments always flowed freely when people saw them. As long as the horsepower ain't too great, the sytem is worth every penny. Hell, I know there are people who would love it empty and the engine loaded with horsepower! I used to. :L
