Side pipes are too Loud - Options?

if you are good welder a cross over pipe as far foward as posible between the sides will help a lot. that is why the older fuel injection corvettes and even the new C-5s have them is to quiet down the exaust plus it may add some power.

Joe, I have also am talking and emailing the sweetthunder designer (I was hoping to work a deal for his under car system). Speaking for myself I have no issues with him at all. His pipes fit perfectly and perform very well. This for me is a personal issue I commute a pretty fair distance so when I drive the noise tends to a bit much. I am fine with the higher noise levels but would prefer it in the back rather than next to my ear.....;-)

PS: I also spoke to the inventor/manufacturer of Sweet Thunder Chambered pipes. Sounded like a decent, honest fellow. The bottom line is: With this system, power gains are directly proportional to noise levels. The "Stock" 2 3/4" system sounds a little louder than my stock GM 2 1/2" inchers. The 3" "high perf" are noticeably louder, and the 3 1/2" racers will rupture your eardrums.

Believe that the crossover will enhance the sound, but will not provide increased power. I do not have any PRACTICAL experience in applied gas dynamics, but this is what I have heard, and it follows from a practical standpoint, because I cannot see the scavenging effect of a crossover pipe. The C5 has long been vilified as being too damn civilized. Me....I love my loud, rich gas smelling, lumpy idling, high rev SCREAMING L76.
Tell me, "Who Do You Love" ( George Thorogood) the ricer, or your vintage cars?

Joe

JOE, i don't have any gas dynamic data, either. i can say that a h-pipe or y-pipe will help increase the bottom-end torque by reducing the pulses in the individual pipes . it allows a scavenging effect and thus promotes better flow.
also, by reducing the pulses(even slightly) will smooth out the idle and give a somewhat quieter and even exhaust tone.
i have had h-pipes installed on many of my cars, with good resulsults. plus the concept has been written in several performance magazines, all stating the benefits.

best to all, have a safe holiday season

I put on a set of stainless steel side pipes from Sweetthunder http://www.sweet-thunder.com/1968-74.htm last year and I find myself avoiding driving the car because I can't hear myself think.

How loud are the under car chambered systems advertised in the mid america?

I am also considering putting the stock pipes back on with a set of dynomax and a cheater pipe in place of the cat.

I have a newly rebuild engine with a lot of goodies on it but I guess I need a middle road solution on the loudness issue or at least not have it right next to me. I wish I could open them up and add in a glass pack.

Any idea what a set of SS pipes are going for on ebay?

It sucks to get old....I can't believe I am saying this....;-)

Hey, John. If you are serious about getting rid of these, I wouldn't mind taking them off your hands. :) Are there any modifications (besides taking off the stock exuaust) that you need to make to the Vette? And can they run right off of the exaust manifolds?

Re: Re: Side pipes are too Loud - Options?

yes they bolt right to the stock manifolds no modifications required and they are well made. They are just a bit loud for my taste. Here is my email make an offer if you are interested.

Are the covers factory original '69? If so, how much? Mozuch@aol.com

OK, now that I have that out of the way,...

The chambered exhaust system, either side pipes or std are basically identical in sound and loudness... the only difference is that the side pipes exit right under your ear. If you don't want that loudness, but still love the sound they make... go with chambered out the rear. If you find there is too much reverb in the cockpit (this would come from the noise underneath the car rather than at the exhaust port itself) then you want to ditch the chambered system and go back to stock pipes with some magnaflows or something. Hope this helps.

I installed side pipes on my 78 which sound great. The box the pipes came in had a bright orange sticker on it: "these pipes are louder than factory pipes". The sound is deeper than stock pipes and rumbles at idle and higher RPMs almost like header sidepipes. Anyhow, I need to paint the fiberglass covers and what to know if anyone has painted their own using VHT high heat paints. Comments ?

I installed the ma 2 1/2" chambered exhaust out the back on my car last spring with a set of dynomax ceramic headers and I really like the sound.Mine are not Stainless steel but aluminizied steel (about half the price).I had a badly coobeled up and restictive 1 3/8" system on it before and I can't beleive how much better it runs with the new system.....
It does get louder when you push on the little pedal. And I do push on the little pedal more often now... But it also sounds great when idleing across the local cruise-in....At 60 mph(2700 rpm) t-tops out, its not bad at all....for me...

I have a 69 with a 454 Big Block, Hooker Headers and Side Pipes. The noise is loud but not too loud, If I drove around at 100 mph all the time I would need ear defenders. But I do not. I think the point is that if you want a long distance cruisemobile which is quiet and you can hear the stereo then the Vette with Side Pipes is not the right car. Who has ever heard of a quiet Vette !

One other point. Hooker Headers will improve power output. However if you are simply fitting Hooker Headers to an otherwise stock car then you will not get much out of it. If on the other hand you are generally upgrading the car to produce more power then Hooker Headers will be much more useful, simply because more power equates to more exhaust and if it can get out easier then that helps. If you have more power with more exhaust but it cannot get out so easy then you have a problem.

I installed Hooker sidepipes on my 75 Vert Stock L48 , glasspack inserts , all I can say is WoW WoW, louder but not too loud, Ive been hearing about side pipes being too loud that ya cant have a conversation??, (maybe ?and Im not at this level of modifing the engine)but mine are Justttt Fantastic. this is the way C-3s should have sounded from the start.
if it was only legal to install Flame Throwers :mad LOL, :w Save the Wave ,
