Silverado intake and exhaust

Just purchased a 2002 Chevy Silverado 1500 extended Cab with the 5.3 V8. Will mods to the intake (K&N FIPK system) and/or exhaust (Flowmaster) help performance in any way (or is it only in the eyes and ears of the beholder).

Not that it's an apple to apple comparison. but A friend at work has a newer chevy blazer that has an intake, headers and high flow exhaust and he is beating quite a few people at the track. I have been in the blazer before and after the work and I'd say it definately helps. He has a few other mods like a chip and high performance plug/wires, nothing major, but it's pretty peppy!
