My otherwise faultless '00 light pewterr roadster had a 2X4 stud jump out from the wall on the side of my garage and clip it leaving a spot 4 inches long, 1/4 inch wide on the right front fender along the edge of the wheel opening that has the paint removed. Touch up? Spray? Professional? Any suggestions would be appreciated.

My first thought would be professional but its hard to tell with out actually seeing the damage. It would also depend on how friendly you are with a good body shop and how picky you are about how that spot looks after the repair.

could be easy or could be a nightmare

I have a pewter colored Volvo XC that had a deer run into it. Not much of a big deal. They had to skin a door.

Despite being a good shop over the years ... and with all of the fancy scopes and light refracting index evaluative tools to do a paint match that was supposed to be on the one door alone, they had to shoot half of the car and hood. It still doesn't match but you can't tell cause' you can't see that many angles at a time.

Try as they must, they couldn't get a match once the sunlight hit it.

Other times in the past, they have blended in a spot that you were pressed to tell there was a flaw unless you knew where it was.

Be sure to take the car out into daylight prior to accepting and paying for the repair. If you can, try to take the car to a shopping center with those orange tint lighting standards. Sometimes paint flaws will show under different lighting. I drove a mist blue Nissan PU for a week before I realized that the truck was a full "clip" and thre front cab and rear box were from two different vehicles. Took it to the store one night and almost dropped my britches when I realized I had been had!

sorry about the luck, find a good shop with a painter who takes a little pride in their work, unfortunately that light pewter(382e) code has atleast 6 varients or alternates; gm uses a lot of the corvette color codes on other models and a truck painted with the same code probably has a very different color on it...so when your paint gets mixed you usually end up with a bad match, i know this because I paint at a collision shop.
I have atleast 5 sprayed out versions of the pewter and can usually find a great blendable match, keep in mind you need room to blend the color over the damaged area and clear the whole panel, this color must not reach the edge of the panel or it will likely look like the wrong color, this is why you often end up blending into the next panel, even with the closest color matches you need room to blend.

Excellemt advice, thaks very much

Hey 666, finally someone not talking out the you know what. I don't even chime in anymore, it's useless. I also work (part-time) at a friends shop.
