After my last oil change - it seems that my 99 coupe is leaking oil, and smoke appears from what seems to be the top of the engine.

I have an appointment with the dealer on Monday; dealer suggest taking it back to the place I got my oil change last - thinking it may just be an oil filter not installed tightly.

Any thoughts on what the problem may be? what to expect?

less than 100 miles for sure. I'll see if the filter is on tight enough.

though isn't smoke from above the engine a symptom of a different problem? valves?

Check that the new filter isn't double gasketed. The old filter gasket could still be attached. Oil on the exhaust under the car will come up as smoke under the hood if there is enough of it. If it happened after the oil change, then that is the place to start.

The number one reason I have always changed my own oil!

way too jiffy lubed

turned out to be that it was the oil change after all. Called up Jiffy Lube, manager told me to bring the Corvette in, tech had a look and exclaimed "who on earth did the oil change?!?!" - they washed off a bunch of excess oil and I haven't seen the problem since :)

point well taken about doing oil changes oneself :) Seemed convenient thing to do at the time.

Jiffy lube would not be my choice of qualified and or certified C5 techs. This just reinforces my attitude on unqualified places of business doing half of the job.
As much as it's a pain I'll continue to do my own Oil Changes as I've been doing for the last 40+ years.

Take a look at the guys in jiffy lube.ect. I know they drive to the soup kitchens looking for help!!:r
