So Why is the Bowling Green Corvette Assembly Plant Shutting Down for So Long?

By now, everyone has pretty much heard that the Bowling Green Corvette Assembly Plant will be shutting down for at least a couple of months after 2017 Corvette production comes to an end in June.


In January, a spokeswoman for the Assembly Plant stated that the plant would be shutting down later this year in order to install equipment for a new build process and make some assembly line upgrades. Although exact dates and times had not been determined, the temporary shut down would cover parts of the summer and fall.

Zora has been trade marked in Australia

This is a great story.

I did read that although GM was having trouble registering the Corvette badge in Australia, they had been successful in registering the trademark 'Zora'.

With local manufacturing coming to an end this year, and the acknowledgemt that Chevrolet were developing all their platfoms for LH & RH drive, will this mean that we will finally see the Vette and ZORA here officially?

Well according to Wheels Mag here in Aussie, the Vette is a done deal.

So if the new "Paint Plant" will house the assembly of the ZR1 as a separate build line, then why would GM need to shut down the C7 assembly line for 4 months.

A couple of interesting questions:

1) Bowling Green also build the XLR within the plant. Did the C7 assembly consume all of the space of the XLR assembly?

2) What happens to the space of the OLD paint plant, once the new paint plant is up and running?

If you do some checking, you will find that corvettes are not selling well. There is a huge dealer inventory to sell.
1.there are so many used ones that they are the best buy.
2.it is not the season.
3. the real fans are holding off for the mid engine.

Also here's an idea:
I they have trouble registering the logo in Australia, they could sell cars without a badge, and the customer could put it on later:L

Tooling for New Car

Nice analysis Rob. Questions I have is "Do the plants compete to build car lines? Did the plant win the bid to build an additional line outside of the Corvette line? Or parts for the cars they do build?" In "All Corvettes are Red", it was stated that at the time each line was allowed to source their parts from whomever they wanted. Maybe they've chosen to build more inhouse stuff.
