I've read the threads on radar detectors but I'm still undecided:confused. Here is my dilemma.

I'm looking at the Solo S2 cordless radar becuase I don't want a corded radar. I don't want to have a cord danglig around. On the other hand the V1 radar looks great but I don't want to have it permanently installed for two reasons. 1) If my top is off is it tempting for someone to try and steal the V1 and 2)I don't like messing around with the cars wiring. I would have a professional do it but I'm just not comfortable messing around with the electrical.

It appears as if the V1 is definitley a better radar, but will I be losing much if I go with the Solo S2. I just want a warning when there is radar around. Where it's coming from I'm not too worried about because if the radar goes off I'm slowing down real fast :D .

Thanks and keep :w

I have had an S2 for 3 months. I can tell you it has paid for itself at least twice! The range is excellent. My vert is a daily driver so I turn the S2 on twice a day, the batteries last about a month.

I would reccomend it!

I would have to agree with jg. I have had a Solo for longer than I can remember. I knew that if I got a corded model, I would never use it...going cordelss was a great decision. Mine is an older model, but I am quite happy with it, the batteries do last an amazingly long time...at least in my estimation. I know for sure that one set lasted one round trip to and from school (5 hours)...can't remember if they lasted for two trips, but it seems like they came pretty close. (I'm assuming the new model has an option to turn off the auto-off feature...having mine shut down half way through my trip gave me one too many heart attacks.)

Hi Sen and JG,

Looks like your both happy with the performance of the cordless. It may not be as good as the V1, but the cordless feature is a definite positve for me.

JG, is the S2 very sensitive and pick up the radar well in advance with enough of a warning for you to slow down?

Thanks

It is amazing sometimes and other times I have been almost on top of the radar. It depends on the terraine, but it has warned me as far as 2-3 miles on the flats. It also turns itself off automatically and will sense movement to stay on when needed.

Hi guys,

I run a Whistler and it's OK (saved me some $$ also), but I was wondering how do you think the batterys do in the sun on a dash board. My Whistler gets kind of hot (sometimes really HOT), sitting in the sun. Just curious because I might switch over to the battery type.

I don't know if there's a budget to stay within. If not I reccomend the Bell remote with front and rear mounted sensors. The panel mounts nicely between the upper sill and rear view mirror.

I'm assuming that we don't need to have the whole "radar detector discussion," but the range that your detector works can depend on many factors...some guns are designed to only emit when the gun is being "fired," so if Smokey decides to wait and gun that shiny new Vette coming around the bend, your detector might not do you any good. (Same for LIDAR, for that matter...it's even worse.)

BTW, if anyone wants to help fund my "stealth corvette" project, I will gladly take donations. :)

The S2 see's in front as well as seeing behind. As far as the heat is concerned I see no effect on mine. I have mounted it in front of the rear view mirror. I don't know how much the Bell is? But the S2 is $329.00 at Best Buy.

I've had them done for customers for $550.

I'll stick with my Passport 8500.. It may have a cord but, its the best around.

Youleave the cord dangling when you drive? Any pictures? Take care:)

Hey there dude!!! Well, the cord is not dangling. It sort of wraps around the front of the dash and then plugs into the sig lighter. I plan on running a wire around the top of the windshield and down the piller. Then I can mount it near the rear view mirror out of the way.

Hardwire the V1 then you won't have any dangling cords aqnd the best radar detector available

There are plenty of detectors that are more than adequate. I haven't had a ticket since something like 1981. I got a decent Whistler that was around a couple hundred and it's done well enough. Considering myself to be at least a decent racer one might rethink the whole detector thing if it's being used to rampage the highways at 90+ mph. That's not really considerate of anyone you might hit and definately will eventually hit. A detector is fun for general awareness and there's nothing wrong with that. Just because a corvette will do 180 the roads are not actually suitable for anything near that. Don't be a ricer it's embarrassing.

I agree with your sentiment. A radar detector doesn't give one the right to drive recklessly. However, I drive my Vette to work and the highway speed limit is 65 and I have to admit I don't drive 65:Steer . I do get up to 80 at times ad i'm not the only one. I know cops liek to pull over sports cars so if I know they're watching me I'll slow down. That's basically what I want the detector for. An ounce of prevention is worth a pund of cure:)

I think most of us do that much. I'm no saint myself.

Do yourself a big favor and by the most favored radar detector in the industry. If you are worried about theft, the V1 removes very easily. Batteries suck and are expensive after while when you have to replace them every month. Just another $00.02 worth.

The V1 seems the way to go :)

Love your Vette - Great Color:_rock

I've had a Solo S2 since Christmas of last year. It's works fine and is very good about filtering the annoying signals like when you drive by a shopping mall. I bought the "Radar detector mounting bracket" from Ecklers. It is a treaded rod that replaces the mounting screw for the mirror and allows the detector to sit right under the mirror. You just have to modify the windshield mounting bracket that comes with the detector. They have a different P/N for 1997-00, 2001-04, and one for 1997-2004 Valentine detectors. The cost is $23.99 and $31.00 for the Valentine mount. It's a very nice setup and you can hardly see the detector from the front of the car. I bought an extra windshied mount from Escort so I could use the detector in the other vehicles (about $4.00). I'm very pleased with the S2.
