1981 white/blue interior automatic
Upon furthur research, and looking in the CAC model center, there does not seem to be an '81 color of "slate" as Mid America calls it. It seems like there is only silver/gray. Does anyone know if there was another gray color for '81? Is the silver/gray seat color actually silver? From pictures I've seen the door panels are sliver, but the seats are more gray?? Thanks to anyone who can shed some light on this, I'm trying to order new seats.

There are to 2 codes for Silver Leather, one is a St. Louis # and the other is a Bowling Green # 152 & 132. These 2 code numbers are SILVER much like the interior color of the 82CE.

There is also a Charcoal Gray color in 1981, and I think these were only available from the St. Louis Plant, (if someone has better documentation please jump in here) the Charcoal Gray LEATHER code is 182, and this may be the "Slate Color" you are looking for. It is not Silver in color by any stretch of the imagination, it's, "Charcoal Gray" ;)

Thanks a lot for the quick reply Bud!! I can always count on you to get the info I need. I think the problem I am having is that all the colors I am looking at are reproductions, and not 100% accurate on the original color. The midnight blue they gave me is almost black, which is a no go for me. The charcoal color is almost black too, right Bud? I think I will go with the '77 color smoke gray. Even though it is darker than the stock color, I think it compliments it well. Thanks again for the reply!

P.S.- Since Mid America is a sponsor, do we get a discount at all?

This might be a bit late for you but here goes...My "81" silver is a definate silver. Quite bright & shinny, I replaced the seat covers with the same.

Sorry I didn't respond earlier, Gary, I was on vacation. I ordered the "smoke gray" seats (Mid America called it 'slate' still), and they were not silver, but gray in color. Unfortunately I had to return them, but it certainly clears up the color confusion. With Mid America, and I'm assuming all over repro parts suppliers, slate and smoke gray are the same color, while silver is a designation all in itself. Thanks for your reply.

No, this is not the same "81 Silver" that came with my Silver interior. The 152 code is correct. The Silver is a distinct Silver, not a grey or oyster.

Thanks for the replies. This is what is so confusing. There seems to be a silver, as well as a smokey color (as Joe pictured), but I cannot find what actual color they are called. All I know is I ordered "smoke gray" and the box said "81 slate" on it and it looked more like Joe's interior than silver. Very confusing. I'm guessing that the aftermarket suppliers just makes one or the other, but calls them both the same things.

I looked up my invoice for the interior that I installed in my car. All they have is their own internal item number which is CA419964, which will mean nothing unless you buy from them. It sounds like you already purchased your set, but for future information the company I bought my stuff through is Willcox Corvette (800)588-3883. They seem to have the best pricing on most items, and most importantly they seem to get the order right when I have ordered from them (several times). I would say that both the carpet & leather seat sets that I have ordered from them have been as close a match as you can get. I just told them I wanted the "81 Silver", and they knew what I was talking about.

I can explain this color issue!

1981 Corvettes made in Bowling Green used 1982 Gray color instead of the sliver used on St. Louis Built cars. I don't know if it was a production switch or what but it seems to hold true to every car built in Bowling Green with this color. To tell where your car was made just look at the vin tag.

St. Louis S/N = 1G1AY8764BS4000001

BOWL GRN S/N = 1G1AY8764B54000001 The difference is B and B5 in the number for cars with the B5 Use the 1982 Gray for the correct color interior.

This only applied to the vinyl parts of the car. The carpet in both cars were the same color or ACC color code 8046. 81 early cars used Corvette America color code 64 silver while 81 late and 82 cars used the color 68.

Well there you have it, an expert chimed in. Makes sense to me. I will add that it must be the vynl & leather parts that are different.

By the way, welcome to the Action Center.

My savior!! Boy this makes so much sense, thanks for the help!! Welcome to the forum!
