Sounds like hitting a large chuck hole!

On my '84 with a hard acceleration from a stop there is the most awful noise. It is like hitting a bad chuck hole. It is coming from the rear. I just replaced the upper and lower spindle control rod bushings. They were completely shot. It rides and sounds like a new Vette now.....except that didn't fix the other problem.

Any ideas where to look next? I realize that all the bushings are 20 years old...but which next???

If I don't stomp on the accelerator (which I NEVER do- my son actually discovered that there is this KLUNK), I do not hear the noise.

Could be the U-joints. There are 5 of them in the rear. 2 on each half shaft and one on the driveshaft.

I should also add that this only happens when it shifts from 1st to 2nd. This transmission kicks you in the butt like no other I have ever seen!!!

Robert

Then I'd have the u-joints checked first to eliminate the possibility. They're easy enough to diagnose by any reputable shop if you're not mechanically inclined. At least that way you can rule them out since any tranny work will be big $$$$$

Sounds like that are hard to track down, however I would check the differential mounts to the frame. They can rot away over time and become metal to metal contact points that really make a clunk when applying torque. Same thing with the transmission mount.

Thanks...that is my next deal. Get it up and look around. I am expecting the differential mounting bushings are shot too. They have no reason to be better than the spindle bushings.

Len :confused when I replaced all the U-Joints in the rear I had six. Two on either half shaft and two on the drive shaft.

The diff carrier bushings are a pain to get to and to get out. I did mine while I had the diff out, being rebuilt for a pinion bearing. Made it much easier ... lowered the carrier, drilled/pulled/pried, finally broke out the hacksaw ... had to get the outer metal sleeves out, cut a wedge out and they pulled right out.

:w

Thanks Hrtbeat. I checked the diff carrier bushings and they looked OK. I mean no cracks in them and I grabbed hold of the carrier and could not budge it by hand.

I will check into the u-joints. I do hear a squeaking when I back up.....only then. I have heard that sound before on my 4X4 driveshaft.

But, the 4X4 always had a vibration when the u-joints were going bad. When I got on it, you could hear the u-joints make a sound like "TINK".

hahaha...the words we use to try to describe noises. Would "tink" be "tink" in another language???

Robert

Tink, clink and clunk are all U-joint sounds depending how long you listen to them. Boom, clunkclunkclunkclunk is what it sounds like if you listen too long.;)

Japanese cars make a tink, crink, and crunk sound.;LOL

Korean chickens make a MOK MOK sound so tink may be something else :L

I just thought of something last night. Check the passenger side motor mount. The rubber tends to desintegrate with age, oil, cleaners, ect. Your sound may not actually be coming from the rear.

:w

Thanks again...hrtbeat.

I was thinking maybe motor mounts. I will check tomorrow.
