Ever since i got my vette 3 out of the 4 speakers dont work. One of them just has a loud hissing sound. Also if i leave my radio fuse plugged it, it will kill my battery. The unit only works the radio, the tape deck and cd player dont work.
I switched the speakers around so i know they work.
Do you guys think its the head unit that is done? I have a mp3 cd player i can stick in there but i want to hear suggestions as to if its that before i start ripping the dash apart and splicing wires...:W

also i was reading that it can be the amps....i have the bose gold system. can i just bypass all the amps and put new speakers in?

Howdy in Canada. This is Bose Gold? The head unit cd malfunction is standard. The speakers each have a seperate amp. Those blowing is standard. There is a seperate amp that controls everything behind the seat or somewhere in the '90. That blowing is standard as well.

You need to think all or nothing. You can get all those components repaired and stay stock. Most confronted with this situation elect to remove the head, amp and amped speakers and go aftermarket. You can have mp3, xm, 12 cd changers etc. The cost is close to the same, but the end result of aftermarket is vastly superior. The head will look fine. research whether or not the '90 will take 1 or 1.5 din size. The one and only downside is not stock anymore.

Make SURE you use a shop that's familiar with vettes if you don't diy.

Ditch the bose. I've been running a Sony aftermarket head unit through an interface box that aloows aftermarket HU's with the bose speakers. I've replaced the speaker amps twice in 4 years so last weekend I installed infinity 6 x 9 speakers in the rear and 4 inch round in the doors using the existing speaker wires and then just wired in the head unit normally. The sound difference can be summed up in one word....AWSOME!!!!!!!!!!

Ditch the bose system.

two rear bose speakers with amps will run almost 250.00. I bought the two infinity 6 x 9's for 89.00.

is it possible to get rid of the HU and put a CD player, and put 6X9's in the rear while keeping the 2 front speakers bose for now. Can i just disconnect the amps in the back and run the wires straight to the speakers?
Can i buy a wiring harness for the new cd player that will plug directly into the old one?

And does anyone know about the amp that controls everything is? I searched around but found nothing at all:confused

Thanks guys i really need some music to listen to!!:_rock

I think normal speakes are 8 ohms or so. However the speakers equipped with the bose units, are not. Therefore the wire might not be heavy enough. As the resistance goes down, current goes up. Also since power is IxV the wattage will increase. I would check if there are any marks on the speakers to indicate a lower impedance, but I am almost they are.

nyernga,
Was all the necessary wires there for the new speakers. I think there should be two wires per speaker. I suspect there are three wires going to my speakers, two for the speaker, and one for the amp turn on. Correct me if I am wrong. Also, where do you find the best deal on speakers, because this mod is in my future, perhaps next weekend.

I agree, ditch the Bose. For the cost of repairing it, you can get everything you need on Ebay: HU, amp, and four speakers, and it will sound ten times better than the Bose. Gently remove all the stock stereo equipment and put it in a box somewhere. It's fairly easy to run new speaker wire, and that's what most people do anyway. The adapter harness for the power, antenna, etc. can be found at any car stereo shop, Kragen, circuit city, etc. Your new stereo should come with pre-amp outputs, you just use RCA cables to run from the stereo to the amp, then the new speaker wire from the amp to all four speakers. It's a big job, everything has to come out of the interior, but it's well worth the investment of time if you want a nice-sounding stereo. I'm really happy with my stereo, here's the amp I bought:

http://www.crutchfield.com/S-uJuTc6FECWD/cgi-bin/ProdView.asp?g=120&I=500MRPF240

It fits perfectly in the passenger side storage bin, and I put 6.5" two-way Infinity speakers in the doors and 6X9 Infinity two-way speakers in the back and an audiovox HU. It's not an earth-shattering system, but it still sounds ten times better than the Bose. My Infinity speakers are really crisp and clear.

Crutchfield is a good site to get ideas, but I bought all my stuff on Ebay for much less.

Each speaker has four wires going to it. I used the wiring diagram to determine which ones were power and which ones carried the signal. I am using the signal wires alone and just taped off the 12 volt source for each speaker in case I ever suffer a severe head injury and want to put the bose back in. ;LOL

PS:

I bought the 6 x 9's and the 4 inch round from circuit city. They had a great price on the infinities.

I have 2 brand new amps for the 90 rear speakers if you're interested. Won't work for me. $100 shipped. I can throw up some pics if you like.

Do you guys know if I can fit the 6x9's in the rear of my vert?

A while back a memeber replaced his stock bose amps with some inexpensive amps he purchased from a local electronics store (I think the posting was "Bose woes". That go me thinking, so I replaced my stock rear amps and speakers (since I bought the car they've never worked) with a 400 watt amp and two 8" woofers. I'm very pleased with the results and I spent less than $150. I'll be posting pictures of my install when I'm finished (I want everything to be perfect).

That was Frye Electronics. I was going to go that route but opted for the infinity speakers instead.

no regrets.

;) I agree ......get rid of the bose.....go name brand aftermarket and with a good amp and speakers and you will do fine....I did that with my 88 and my 79.....thats the way to go....:upthumbs

I think there allot of right answers when it comes to updating/replacing the stock bose systems. It just depends on how much money and time you're willing to spend. I know allot of people would be impressed on how good the stock bose head unit sounds with better amps and speakers installed.

Well I think i'm going to go all new aftermarket stuff....seeing as how i have the 2 6x9's already, all i need is some 4's.
Thanks guys good to hear your opinions.

aftermarket stereos

If your going for aftermarket stuff, look on ebay. You wont find cheaper prices for car audio than ebay.Alpine has been kicking butt the last two years, making high quality audio components for less.(three engineers from Hi end manufacturers made the move to Alpine, and have rocked the house.)Their head units are both XM and Sirius radio compatible,as well as linking up with an IPOD to play mp3's.They also have button illuminations that match the corvettes interior lights. As well as face tilting capabilities for easier viewing(an added bonus for our cars).Just thought I would put my 2 cents in.(I am an audio freak,at home, and in my cars).:_rock Oh yeah,6x9's are ok,but seperates(woofer and tweeter with a crossover)have the best sound.

Alpine's been pretty much rockin' since the early 80's :_rock
