QUESTION: if the sppedo cable breaks at the cruise control end how would you get the broken piece out of the cruise control end.

also can the speedo cable wear over the years( 22 to be exact) and just not fit right anymore or not be a tight fit and not allow the speedo to work?

While I had to access the cable at one point I did not take the top (speedo to transducer) one out. The bottom one was metal on one end and plastic on the other. If there is a broken plastic piece in there you might be able to get it out with something sticky as there was not much friction. Otherwise I suspect that you will have to pull the transducer out and try and shake it free.

If it were me I would just replace the tranducer, I think about $100 bucks. When my speedo quit working the transducer had locked up and spun the plastic piece off the cable at the transmission and I had to replace the transducer and the lower cable.

If the plastic piece broke off I would suspect that you have the same problem. Logic suggests that if you cannot spin the far end of either the lower or upper cable while attached to the transducer then it has locked.

Be careful if you remove the cable at the transmission. Mine immediately started leaking and I had to find a new piece. The o-rings just wouldn't hold up to being reattached. I don't know how rare that piece is but if you need it I have a source here in Atlanta.

well mine might just have worn over time. i cannot see anything inside , so i will find out when i re-install the new cable

Maybe the problem is in the speedo head. When I turned mine it made the needle go up.

When I bought my car the tach and the odometer didn't work. While I had the dash out I ahd the tach and speedo rebuilt. The tach turned out to be the circuit board and even though it was working, the speedo was in worse shape than the tach.

Bob

so was your bad.. man i wish we lived closer, i could use your expertese.

No it worked when I spun it that's why I'm suggesting that you give it a try. If it doesn't move then I would guess it's broke. If it does, then it still might be.

Sent you an email with my home phone. Call me tonight after 8 and we can talk if you would like.

Bob

tried to install new speedo cable through engine compartment,,, cannot get it to go through, is there an easy way to do this or a trick to it?

CSC & BOB.....

After reading these posts, I'd thought I'd chime in here with a little info of my own.
I replaced my speedo this last summer.
Everything worked fine, for exactly 97 miles, and then quit.
I pulled and played with that speedo about 6 times, all with NO results. By then, I figured it had to be cable.
I ordered and received a new one.

The day I was attempting to replace the cable was about 100 outside, and there I was sweating removing the dash, once again, waiting for a buddy of mine to come over to help "fish" the cable through, HE NEVER SHOWED.
After a while, it was just too hot to continue, and I "slapped" everything back together, without THE NEW CABLE.
Re-installing the face plate I noticed a slight JUMP in the needle, so I back off on the pressure of the screws.
THE SPEEDO HAS WORKED FINE SINCE.
Moral of the story, when you reinstall the Speedo/Tach Face plate, DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN.
If you do, the needle might stick, at least it did in my case.
GOOD LUCK

:duh

on mine i have to install one end of the cable in the cruise control... it doesn't seem to want to go in. do i have to press or push something in before i install this end?

Mine is threaded and simply screws in. The end is square and had to be twisted a slight bit to align.

When you compare the two cables does it look like there is a piece missing from the end? It sounds to me like the plastic end might have broken off in the transducer.

Bob

Kinda looks that way. i know you want me to take the transducer out... any other way.. sorry i didn't get to talk to you last night... but i did get the cable routed and am ready to plug the ends in.
