Speedo correction after 3.45 -> 4.11 gear change

Houston, we have a problem.

It turns out that the shop I have switching the rear end in my 1996 Corvette LT4 CE from 3.45 to 4.11 doesn't have the facility to reprogram the computer for the new ratio. They say it will read high, will set a check engine light, and it won't pass smog in this condition. They're some months away from upgrading to the system they need to do that kind of reprogramming. But they aren't so equiped just yet.

So I've been checking around, and so far it's looking surprisingly difficult to just change the axle ratio in the computer.

The shop initially recommended that I use LT4-Edit if I have a laptop. I checked on this... LT4-Edit apparently costs $550, and does a ton more tuning stuff than I need for my rather stock car.

The shop says they have a Hypertech programmer that they could sell me for it that they'd cut me a good deal for about $400. I told them I've seen them for $300 and less online, and they think I may be looking at a lower model that can't do it.

I called Corvette Connection, and they said they have a system that can do such things, but they aren't sure if they can do 4.11. Their system may only do stock GM gear ratios. I told them about the tire size trick I'd heard of on these forums, and they said they didn't know if that would work or not. They're looking into it. If they can figure out how to do it, they'll charge me $40-$50.

I called Corvette Clinic, and they said they sell some converter box that goes on the transmission and could do it for like $150. They referred me to a place called Race Street Rally in San Jose with my question. So that place told me that I could buy a Predator programmer to do it. I could buy one for around $440. They said the Hypertech programmer changed gear ratios but can't actually do 4.11. They say the Hypertech does stock GM ratios only. And they said they could send the computer off to Ed Wright to program it for about $500.

I've searched the forums, and I'm not really finding an answer.

So... ummm... help? I really don't want to pay a big chunk of money for this... especially for options that are reported to maybe not even work... it doesn't seem like I should have to pay so much just to change one value in the ECM. But maybe I'm just dreamin here. I mean, if I have to pay that much I will. But... geez...

Is there a shop in the bay area that can just do it outright for a reasonable charge?

Any advice would be appreciated!

Gear Change

I would think you can just put a new gear on the speed sensor. The gear is just a plastic one, and can be changed out to accomdate such things.

When I put the 6 speed Richmond tranny in my car, they told me which gear to put in. I would think you could be able to figure out how many teeth you need. If I remember right, the stock gear has 18 teeth (don't hold me to that), so you can adjust accordingly.

Some more information on my quest here... followed up on Corvette Connection. They say they have a GM Tech 2 scan tool to change rear end ratio programming, but it only does stock ratios. He couldn't remember what the highest ratio in it was exactly, but he recalls it was in the high 3's (3.73? 3.9?)... nothing as far as 4.11.

They said they'd be willing to experiment with the tire size plus gear ratio trick that I've heard of on these forums. They won't charge me if it doesn't work.

Can anyone provide instructions on how to get the GM Tech 2 to program the car for 4.11 rear gears? I have the stock non-Z51 tires.

Re: Speedo gear change... that sounds like a possible option. Thanks for the suggestion. I'd need some more concrete information for that route... Like what exactly are the drive and driven gears in there now and how many teeth would be needed on the new gear and what part number is that?

When I've tried to do that route before on a K-5 Blazer, I found that GM didn't make a driven gear with the number of teeth I needed. And that may be the case again here. 4.10 is a very numerically high gear.

I know I'm not the first person to put 4.10's in a late model C4. There's gotta be someone out there who knows exactly how to do this.

Any help appreciated!

I would bet that C4C5specialest(sp) can help!!!! And if by chance, he dosent know, someone will jump in to help!!!! Good Luck!!!

Well, I didn't get any replies on this that I could use, so I've dropped the money on a Hypertech III programmer through MidAmerica Designs. It's supposed to be here on Monday.

I checked the Hypertech site and their online instructions on their programmer. While I've heard several reports that Hypertech couldn't reach up to 4.11 gears, their documentation on their Hypertech III specifically lists 4.09 as one of their available ratios. I believe, based on my research, that earlier versions of the Hypertech programmer didn't have this option, but the new one does. I'll verify that it has it when I actually get the programmer, but I have no reason to believe that it wouldn't have it when the manual says specifically that it does.

And, of course, the difference between 4.09 and 4.11 would only throw the speedo off by 0.5 mph at 100mph. Close enough. Might even be more correct in practice. Could be adjusted exactly by playing with the tire size, too. But I don't think I will.

Re changing speedo driven gear to compensate... the shops I've talked to have said that there is no such apparatus. These are running a sensor which just clicks off each rotation of the output shaft. Programming the computer is the only way to do it.

Basically, I've gone with the only option that I can verify actually works. More expensive than I'd like, but oh well. I'll let you guys know how it turns out.

Skant,

I just saw this thread, did you fix it?

I had same problem changing from 2.59 to 3.54 . I got the Hypertech and it goes from 3.45 to 3.73 so I selected 3.45 and just fine tuned it with the tire size option! (checked with a GPS just to be sure).

No need to change speedo driven gear.

Good luck! :w

Yeah. The Hypertech worked great. No issues whatsoever.
