Do you need to drop the steering column down to access the speedo or is it not necessary?I am going to pull out the speedo today and order one of those 140 mph speedos on Monday.

speeedoooo

I know on my 74 that you have to drop the steering wheel in order to get it out, or it wont clear the dash pad. I can take off window side moulding to lift dash pad up about 1 1/2 inches but thats it. Thimk you have to take window out to remove dash pad. I cracked mine putting it back in last year, needed about one more inch. I am removing my tach to put in electronic tach out of 77 vette soon.

Dave, it will make it easier, but with the tilt wheel all the way down you should be able to wiggle it out. If not just remove the lower column panel and loosen the two column bolts and your good to go.

I am about ready to order one also, sounds like everyone is happy that has converted theirs. How about letting me/us know how you make out

Hi Steve, nice to hear from you again. I did remove the lower column panel and air duct, but it probably wasn't necessary. You were right,no need to lower the column, just tilt it down the whole way. It was not a big deal at all getting the old speedo out. I decided I would replace the cable while I am at it. I recently replaced the driven gear, sleeve and seals at the tranny so I thought I might as well go the whole way. Pretty east getting the cable out too. It will probably be a little tricky rerouting the cable along the firewall, but if I take my time it should not be a problem. My old speedo had a jumpy needle at lower speeds so a new speedo+cable should do the trick. I called John at RedLine this afternoon and placed my order! He is a very nice guy. He said he would UPS it to me Monday,$56.50 exchange. It is hard to believe like the others said. They allow you 10 days to return the core.

Sensor on back of speedo?

L81'ers,

Did you have a sensor on the back of the speedo when you removed yours?

speed sensor

GerryLP- The automatic cars have a speed sensor. The manual trans cars do not.

That makes sense

I guess that if one wants the torque converter to lock-up, then it needs to know how fast the car is travelling...:duh

Thanks!
