I hate the Corvette ZR1. Also, I’m a pretentious snob with “a Eurocentric class agenda.” To understand my writing, some readers apparently “require my dictionary and even my thesaurus at the same time. “ I like Ferraris, Porsches, and, in fact, any car brand with a name that’s the least bit tricky to pronounce. I do not like Chevys. See, “Chevy” is too easy to say. Also, Chevys don’t smell good.
Such are the sorts of things readers write about you when you dare utter a criticism of America’s beloved, red-white-and-blue, two-seat superhero, the Chevrolet Corvette. Aim a deprecating remark at the greatest Vette ever, the ZR1, and, well, it’s “Eurocentric” war.
The firestorm unleashed after the appearance of the February issue, in which I wrote a column (also viewable here) entitled “King Near: What you don’t get for almost $120,000.” The point of the piece was simply to illustrate that, however great the ZR1 is -- and it is, indeed, one of the most spectacular automobiles I have ever driven -- if you think it blows off the best from the likes of Ferrari and Porsche by every subjective and objective measure, well, you’re swimming in Bowling Green Kool-Aid.
