Yesterday, I got the last of the little things put back together, put some gas in the tank, filled the carb fuel bowls, gave the carb 2 pumps on the gas pedal and turned the key. Started right up on the second revolution. Happened so fast I almost didn't know what to do next.

Ran it around 2000 rpm to break in the cam for about 30 min. It ran pretty hot, but that was due to the timing being pretty far retarded. Has a small leak around the temp sender, but that was it.

After it cooled down, I got down to setting the timing, and again found replacement parts that aren't quite correct. With the aluminum intake I couldn't get the distributor rotated enough to set the timing correctly. Had the dist in and out about 4 times moving one tooth back and forth, but just couldn't get there. I was either hitting the Vac can on the manifold, or the coil bracket. I ensured that the dimple on the drive gear was lined up with the rotor tip, but there just wasn't enough adjustment. Finally removed the drive gear and put it back on 180* (with the dimple opposite the rotor tip) and the timing was right on with the Vac can in the middle of the available adjustment area. All I can figure is that my new (replacement) distributor shaft was assembled incorrectly.

Thanks to John Z, and SWCDuke for all the info on valve train adjustments and timing tips. I'm using the VC1810 Vacuum can, with 12* initial and all timing in at 2500. Valves adjustments were dead on and suprisingly quiet for solids. Car now idles down to 750 rpm. With the correct timing, the temp now stays under 180* all day long.

Got the Power steering bled and balanced also. Plenty left to do. Brake bleeding is next. May be drivable in a couple of weeks.

Subfixer,

I'd say CorvetteFixer too. :beer

Sounds like you are real close to the first ride in a while, enjoy it.

Congratualtions! :upthumbs

That distributor thing can really get to you. I know, it has gotten to me on more than one occasion. I want to high-five you on inspecting that gear on the shaft. You did well to look so closely. ;)

To have the engine start so quickly! I wish all the ones I started had started so fast!

Enjoy.

Save The Wave! :w

Got a lot of stuff done yesterday...

Front and rear bumpers are back on (Jeez, there's a lot of bolts), Grill is in, Lined up all the marks on the steering gear (steering box mark to split in lower rag joint collar, steering wheel to steering column mark- Bubba had been here before....).

Bled the brakes (IH2LOSE - Manual bleeding with Father-in-law's help), but after we were done, I discovered a leak at the front junction block where the M/C line screws in. Cleaned several times and checked everything, but it still leaks. Ordering a new M/C line and junction block today.

Still waiting for my shocks (Bilstein HD's) and air cleaner to arrive.

Here's a tip: When putting the body back on, make sure the upper bolts for the rear shocks are installed in the correct position. Last night I discovered that I had put the bolts in the upper brackets with the heads on the Inside. Well, now that the body is on, I can't get the bolts out. Will have to cut the heads off (still trying to figure out how I'll do that). The bolts go in with the heads on the Outside.

Live and learn.......

It's almost anti-climatic putting everything back together.... The body is not in the best shape. Need some cracks fixed and really needs paint, but that's not in the budget for this year. Doesn't look bad from 25ft and I'm not having it judged so I figure I'll just have some fun driving this year and worry about the looks later.

Subf - take her down the CT coast for a test drive, I'll see you in a few hours . . . congrats of the superb progress

Jack, not ready to go quite yet as I have a few issues to work out, but if I'm lucky, maybe next week sometime. I'll let you know.

Congrats SubBoy....

I have to go thru all that little stuff too... Hope I can get it all done for Carlisle..

By the way...are you going to do Corvettes at Carlisle this year..???

Congratulations! Really gives you a boost when your plans hit these milestones. Nice to get to enjoy it this summer and do more work on "What can wait" during the winter and when the budget allows. Best of both worlds! Have a great summer. More pics coming soon?:upthumbs

Did You register for the 63-67 Sting Ray Reistry? That's where all the Midyear guys will be.

I thought I did this once before, but I'm registered now. See ya'll at Carlisle.

BTW, the website doesn't look like it's been updated in a while. Still has info for 2004 Aug Carlisle and nothing for this year. Guess they'll get around to it.

no, as a registry it doesn't seem to have a lot going for it, but it's free and it allows midyears guys to get together and park together at Carlisle. Other than that I haven't found much of a use for it.

VNV, you have a link to the registry?

Yep I'll post the link here for you but I ment .....telling Carlisle Productions when you register for the show field that you will be with the 63 67 Sting Ray Registry. This way the windshield sticker they give you will have that location on it for you to be authorized to park in. You can contact Carlisle to change it if you already registered.

The Sting Ray site has not been up dated yet but you can email them wit your info ..it's free...

Way to go Paul! You have really made great progress since I saw you in Oct. (?) I think. Keep the info and pics coming. I am just about finished polishing out the clear coat on my 66. I hope to have the reassembly completed by July 1st. A parade on the 4th is a good possibility.
