I have a strange one. My 1976 is making a noise but only under certain conditions.
When the car is cold, not started in several days, and I go to start it the starter has to turn the engine over at least 10 times before it starts (this is normal). What is happening is that when the starter stops I get a loud metal grinding noise. It only happens when the started is not turning the engine over, just right as it goes slack, righ when I turn the key out of the start position and into the run mode.
The car will start even with the noise and run fine and when the engine is warm it does not make any noise when I start it (it only takes one turn by the starter to start it when its warm) does anyone have any suggestions. I was going to remove the starter and see if thats it. I know this sounds strange but if you have any ideas please let me know.

It sounds like the bendix drive may be on its way out.
I agree.. also if it takes longer to start when cold.. you may have a battery that is on it's way out or maybe a high resistance issue between the battery cable and the starter..
