66 coupe,72 vert,
The starter on my 66 L-72 appears to be on the way out, just wanted to know which heavy duty/ heat resistance replacement would be best. Thanks

It's been a long time, so I don't know which replacement is best, but I know I would NOT get one at a local store or national chain that sells no-name replacements and re-builds. You never know what you're getting or where it's made, and the seller doesn't know either.

These are units are probably long out of production, judging by Rock Auto's catalog, but they show rebuilt AC Delco units for under $60 bucks. They also carry a number of other brands, all rebuilt. You can probably get new units, but they are knock-offs, probably Chinese. These units may be OK, but I wouln't bet on it.

You may be fortunate enough to have a local shop in town that will rebuild your unit...that would be awesome. The best starters I've had have been OEMs rebuilt by a tech at a local shop who has a reputation to maintain.

Agree with comments with one caveat - your car, but one question - is the car a NCRS-judged car or will it be? If so, then I would look to NCRS-level rebuild. If you want quick turn-around talk with Ken.

Not a chance, this one is driven and enjoyed at least 2 times a week. Decided to go with a power master

You made a good choice. Not that Powermaster is better than most. They just built a starter based on old racer technology..

All the GM divisions, with exception of Cadillac, used a 3 field coil windings with a shunt. Cadillac with the 500CI engine, needed more cranking power and used 4 field coil windings...All the other GM Racers in the 70's that had hard cranking from higher compression, upgraded their 3 coils to the 4 coil windings. They were a bolt in install and worked great for cranking over the higher compression engines...Powermaster just used that design in their starters..
