I am replacing the starter on my '90 L-98.:bashThe GM service manual refers to two shims which go beween the block and the starter. When I pulled the old starter off,I didn't see any shims or hear them fall. They aren't stuck to the block or the starter.Maybe they weren't there?Absolutely necessary?130,000 on this original starter.:Steer

They also refer to a sealant to be applied after installation. What are they referring to and where does it need to be applied?:confused

shims are not always necessary. no two blocks are machined exactly the same, there for clearance on mounting pads will be off a little from one motor to another. shims are used on a starter to set the drive gear clerance to the ring gear on the flywheel. if your ori starter did not have any shims a good starting spot would be to try the new starter with out any shims. it the drive engages and won't disengage then you add shims till it will turn loose when you release the ignition switch. don't set it to loose or it will wear the drive and the ring gear on the flywheel. just my opinon hope it helps. robert
