Help.

I purchased a new set of knock off 15x8 steel rallye rims here in Australia. The rims were in the boxes and had not been opened.
My problem is that these rims are not round and even though I have had them balanced, there is vibration with them and the BF Goodrich tyres that are on them.

I have had the rims and tyres mixed matched balanced and there is improvement, but we do not have a smooth ride yet. The tyre guys said the rims are crap and the tyres are the best either.

Just wondering if any of you fellas have had the same problem and am wondering if you solved it. At 110km/h or more the vibration smooths out. When slowing, the vibration comes back with a shimmy.

Any tips would be great.

Cheers

Tony

If the wheels are "out-of-round", that problem cannot be fixed with any type of balancing. It's a product defect issue. I'd try and return the wheels for refund.

Are these knock offs (cast aluminum), or steel rally rims? Maybe you mean knock offs in the sense of aftermarket reproductions.

Are they 'out of round' or do they suffer from lack of concentricity? Big difference.

If they are cast knock offs, I think you're out of luck as Hib says. If they are stamped steel rally wheels, I've found that while they are acceptably 'round' very few of them have a center hole that is concentric to the tire mounting flange. Try measuring them again but located and attached by the five studs instead of the center hole.

I initially rejected a set of 7" wheels for a '68 for the same condition. Once we mounted them in the same manner as the car, the out of round was acceptable by OEM specs. The problem was the tires.:beer
