Okay so I changed out the turn signal switch in the '81,got everything apart and put it all back together.I ended up with play in the steering wheel.(Column housing is tight,so I'm thinking loose bolts on the tilt.internal play.) so I took it back apart as far as the turn signal switch and every thing is feeling tight...start putting it back together,Lock ring, hub assembly, ect,
and I still have movement in my steering wheel.Lateral play,up and down it is tight.Steering wheel is in the locked position when all this is happening....
how can I get this to stop. what am I doing wrong,or am I missing a step

thanks

Bill,
You have one of two problems. When you removed the lockplate the upper shaft bearing inner race slipped back and did not re-seat when you re-installed the lockplate spring or the four bolts holding the tilt housing are loose.

I don't believe it is the 4 bolts on the tilt column B/c the play isnt that way ...I will double check the bearing in its race

thanks for the reply Mike...
