I have just replaced my original '77 steering box with a rebuilt unit from Corvette Central. I replaced the control valve at the same time with a CC rebuilt unit (new were out of stock). The power cylinder and all other front end "wear parts" , ps hoses, etc. have been replaced within the last 8 months.
After install and bleeding the system, it seems that there is no "power assist", it was working before replacing these two parts.
The shop manual troubleshooting guide lists the following under HARD STEERING:
Cause: f. Power steering valve lube fitting not bleeding properly.
Remedy: f. Relieve lube pressure under boot with screwdriver blade.
Anyone heard of this? I hate to go poking around under the boot of a new valve (probably voiding the warranty). Any other thoughts / suggestions??

Yes, unfortunately this is one of the problems experienced with rebuilt power steering control valves. There is usually some slilicone adhesive that is gumming up the valve. The input ball on the valve should move back and forth smoothly and easily. If it doesn't, get a relacement. No amount of probing under the boot is going to get all of the silicone out of there.

I swear they never test these things off the rebuild line.:mad
I went through installing 3 of them before I got a good one on my 82.

There is an adjustment to the Control valve. If you remove the cap that you see on the side of the valve, you will see the adjuster. The valve should be in a neutral position. Now I'm trying to remember from memory so maybe someone else will chime in - with the valve disconnected from the frame, the piston should not move either in or out. You move the adjusting nut in whatever direction you need to in order that the valve is "neutral." You should have gotten instructions on this adjustment when you bought the valve. I bought a new valve because I heard bad things about "rebuilt and reconditioned" ones. Ecklers had a good deal when you bought a new valve, they bought your old one. If you need instructions on the procedure, I can send them to you tomorrow.

Unfortunately, the instructions with the valve were clear "DO NOT ADJUST"

Sorry about the partial reply... I'll get with Corvette central and see if I can exchange this defective unit for a NEW one. Thanks for the info.
