Any one know why the factory makes use of special locknuts on the steering wheel which can only be used once? I replaced steering wheel and the nut comes loose every 3 to 4 weeks. I had a heck of a time finding a regular lock nut to replace it with. None of the large or small hardware stores, or auto parts stores seem to carry the right size. The dealer will be glad to sell you a use only once replacement for 12 dollars.
I finaly found a place that just sells fasteners that has the right type and size. Cost is fifteen cents each.
For any one in the same situation here is some tech specs of what size and type nut can be used. Grade 9 nylock nut, 14mm inner diameter, 1.5 thread pitch, fine thread. Metric.
The place I found was called chula vista bolt, in San diego.

I would imagine it is a safety item and why take chances. Why don't you use some locktite on the nut? That stuff works great. Starting in the mid Seventies I used it on all the Harleys I built and never again had a come back because of stuff vibrating loose. Good luck.

I have heard so it's only hear/say that the nut is slightly out of round so when it's torqued down properly it will not back off.

The manual states to replace it with a new one every time you remove it for safety reasons. It does not matter if you torque it down to specified torque or more torque. It is designed for one use only. I just do not understand why they did not make use of a regular lock nut that can be used several times. Probably so they can charge people 12 bucks every time for a nut that can be had for .15 cents.
