Steering wheel play

kohlbear- We'll need more info.... but I assume you mean while driving and not a loose sterring wheel on the column... Have you been in for an alignment check? If you jack up the car, do you notice one or more tires have a lot of play in them when rocking back and forth?
The more info the better here... You'll get replies.

The wheel bearings are ok. There are no fluid leaks. The steering wheel collumn under the hood, tie rods and rack and pinion appear to turn as soon as the steering wheel while the engine is not running. The car was aligned. However the steering wheel in the car still moves about an inch or two in both directions while driving the car before it starts to turn. It also sometimes jerks the wheel while coming to a finall stop and applying the brakes. The front brakes wre just replaced and they said the calipers looked ok.

How many miles? Maybe tie rod ends, or a worn rack.

Wow

Those miles should be too low for any wear I would think.
