I have a 1987 coupe that requires a new water pump. In looking around, i noted that the stewart water pump is a high volume model. Anyone use one of the aftermarket pumps?

I run an aftermarket (FlowCool) higher flow water pump, but I am not sure I need the extra flow.

Their experts told me that higher flow does not necessarily mean cooler running. The coolant can move too quickly through the system, neither allowing it sufficient time to absorb the engine's heat, nor enough time in the radiator to adequately cool.

I'd look for a quality remanufactured stock pump or a bearing equipped aftermarket pump, with normal flow.

Just my .02 cents worth. I did ALOT of research into water pumps years ago and finally settled on the Stewart brand. They have performed perfectly. I have used them on engines from a 327 to a stroked 496 big block.

Here in Phoenix with the summer heat and the stop and go traffic, cooling systems are tested to the max. I always settle on the stage two aluminum.

Unless you go the OEM route, most replacement water pumps are made in China and the auto parts stores always warranty them because they only cost them about $ 10.00 while they charge you 30-40 bucks. They could care less about your labor to change them.

Go either OEM or Stewart.

I installed a Stewart high flow pump on my 90 and it worked great. I would highly recommend them. I was have "high" heat problems, not over heating but getting very high. So I replaced the pump with a Stewart and I pulled the radiator and cleaned it. Also went to stright water, no antifreeze, with Preston Rust Inhibitor (Stewart recommendation). After that the temp never got past mid guage. Cannot say which fix did what, just that it fixed the high heat problem.

tom...

Personally, I don't see how a high-volume pump will be any better than a regular flow pump. There is only so much surface area in the radiator, and the car is already optimally designed to cool the coolant before it returns to the engine. I remember reading that with a high-flow pump, someone had a concern about the coolant not remaining in the radiator long enough to sufficiently cool down.

If I was to ever need a new pump, Stewart is the way I would go, I've heard many good recommendations on that brand.

OE, Stewart, Weiand, Edelbrock, Moroso & Milodon ... all have good quality & performance ... each one has certain +/-. Note: Stewart has been absorbed into a large global parts conglomerate ... the name's EMP I think.

BTW ... I sought & bought a brand new CARTER (good old USA brand) iron replacement wp for a GM 4.3L V6 ... turns out the carter was actually made in Japan ... does a good job though.
