Stock Exhaust Manifolds

That is quite a healthy gain over stock.

The stock mufflers suck. They only flow through one outlet per muffler!:L The exhaust manifolds, and especially the two pup cats, really hinder exhaust flow.

This is what I'm doing this winter:

long tube headers, high flow cat, 1.6 roller rockers. I already have a Flowmaster catback on there. Basically, I'm doing the whole exhaust system from the heads to the cat back.

Why? Because I just got a raise today :D and I'm yearning for more power.

I have a 1 3/4" header test in a issue of Corvette Fever or Vette and the gain was like 12 hp or so. Most of the hp gain was across the board with the TPI narrow rpm range. A complete exhaust upgrade on a stock TPI car will gain about 20 to 25 rwhp. Just my opinion of course. The TPI cars dont make big power past 4200 rpms in stock form so it will not see big gains from a high flow exhaust like other cars do.

Did they say anything about the torque gains?

What kind of headers are you using? I also have an 88 and I would like to get a set of ceramic coated but couldn't find any that were made specifically for my year. Also I was told the AC support rod would have to be moved or changed.

After adding up the costs, it looks like I'll go with the TPIS headers. They are known for their ease of installation. I think Mad Mic installed his in a couple of hours with a pair of jackstands. The coated TPIS headers with the front y-pipe run about $750 or so.

I also have an '88 and I've been looking at Hooker Headers. From Summit or Jegs I think they're about $550 for ceramic coated. But that does not include a Y pipe. I don't need a Y because I already am running 2 1/2" dual exhausts.
BTW. I think for most applications it is the alternator support rod (not AC) that needs a little reworking with a header installation.

After the install on my Bro's 87, I will not even consider another brand of headers. They went in well. The only problem, was that due to the ceramic coating, the headers didn't want to go into the Y pipe very easy.

Justin,

How long was the install?
